Nolan Haataja threw a four-hit shutout and the Menahga baseball team managed to push across a pair of runs to eliminate Fergus Falls with a 2-0 victory in the opening round of the Section 8AA playoffs at Menahga on Tuesday, June 1.
Menahga (the No. 3 seed in the South) was held to only two hits in the game, but capitalized on Fergus Falls errors to advance.
The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Liam Torola reached on a two-out error, advanced to second when Haataja was hit by a pitch and scored on another error on Ivan Anderson’s grounder.
In the fifth, Sam Jackola was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Ethan Hendrickson’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Haataja’s RBI single to cap off the scoring.
Hendrickson led off the bottom of the first with a single to account for the Braves’ other hit.
Haataja didn’t walk a batter and struck out one in the complete-game victory as Menahga improved to 17-4.
Fergus Falls, the No. 6 seed, ended the season at 5-16.
Menahga will play Wadena-Deer Creek at Wadena at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday (June 3) with another game to follow at 5 p.m. as the double-elimination portion of the section tournament begins.
