Several Park Rapids athletes used the regular-season track and field finale at Vern Weekley Field as a tune-up for the state Class A True Team meet.

Six teams competed in the Park Rapids Invitational on Tuesday, May 25. The Park Rapids girls used five winning performances to compile 172.25 points and capture their fourth title of the season while the Park Rapids boys finished second with 174 points despite placing first in six events. Both Park Rapids teams had several athletes not competing in their best events.

Both Park Rapids teamed qualified for the state Class A True Team meet, which will be held at Vern Weekley Field starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 28.

Girls top field

The Panthers won all three relays they entered and added a pair of individual winning efforts to edge out Thief River Falls and Staples-Motley for the title.

Hannah Morgan won the triple jump with a distance of 32 feet, 9.25 inches while Addison Lauwagie and Morgan Koppelman tied for first in the pole vault by clearing 8 feet. Laney Vrieze, Kendra Scholz, Olivia Miller and Morgan finished first in the 4 x 100 race in 53.62 while Addison Lauwagie, Holly Johnson, Natalia Lopez and Koppelman won the 4 x 200 event in 1:54.43 and the 4 x 400 race in 4:17.09.

Adding runner-up finishes were Koppelman in the 400 (1:02.56), Scholz in the 300 hurdles (50.50), Riley Pike in the long jump (13-6.50), Simone Wolff in the discus (93-10.50) and Olivia Davis in the triple jump (30-6.50). Placing third were Lopez in the 400 (1:04.30), Brandi Morgan in the long jump (13-5.50), Wolff in the shot put (28-2.50), Sydney Lange in the discus (89-4.25) and Pike in the triple jump (30-3).

Turning in the Panthers’ other top performances were Quinn Hunter in the 100 hurdles (fourth in 19.02); Lauwagie (fourth in 28.18) and Davis (fifth in 28.56) in the 200; Brandi Morgan (fourth at 4-6) and Hunter (tied for fifth at 4-4) in the high jump; Julia Harmon in the 800 (eighth in 2:56.31); and Nora Bolton in the 1,600 (10th in 6:40.18).

Thief River Falls finished second with 154 points while Staples-Motley was third with 146.50 points. Crosby-Ironton (105.25), Pine River-Backus (55) and Trek North (10) followed.

S-M boys win

Staples-Motley racked up 164 points to edge out Park Rapids, Crosby-Ironton (131) and Thief River Falls (128.50) for the title.

Tristan Hill led the Panthers with a pair of winning efforts in the discus (145-10) and shot put (40-10). Also taking first for Park Rapids were Dawson Dahring in the 110 hurdles (18.87) and Noah Huot in the 800 (2:11.88). The 4 x 800 relay team of Eli Bervig, Kaleb Stearns, Nathaniel Bervig and Lane Monaghan also took first in 8:26.42 as did the 4 x 200 relay team of Jayden Whalen, Hill, Logan Jackson and Josiah May in 1:38.65.

Luke Hartung was the runner-up in the shot put at 40-5 while Pierce DeBlieck took second in the 110 hurdles in 19.53 and third in the 300 hurdles in 48.00. Whalen was the runner-up in the long jump at 18-1.50. The 4 x 400 relay unit of Jackson, Steearns, Matt Dahring and Monaghan also placed second in 3:45.46.

Placing third for the Panthers were Whalen in the 100 (11.90) and Ronaldo DeLaCruz Gomez in the 3,200 (11:25.75) while Hill in the 200 (24.46) and Zach VanBatavia in the triple jump (36-3) finished fourth. Cameron Runyan tied for fourth in the pole vault by clearing 9-6.

The other top showings for the Panthers were turned in by Nathaniel Bervig in the 400 (fifth in 57.30), Thomas Lopez (fifth in 2:18.62) and Ephraim Bervig (sixth in 2:21.50) in the 800, Blaine Hensel in the 1,600 (sixth in 5:26.18), and Hensel and Landon Strasburg in the high jump (tied for seventh at 5 feet).
