Park Rapids’ batters were kept off balance in a 10-3 loss to New York Mills at the Area High School field on Monday, May 17.
The Panthers managed only three hits and nine baserunners while striking out 10 times in the loss.
After New York Mills took a 3-0 lead by scoring once in the first and twice in the third, the Panthers cut the gap to 3-1 when James Hartig reached on an error, stole second and scored on another error.
The Eagles extended the lead to 9-1 with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Ethan Eischens walked and Josh Crandall doubled. After an RBI single by Cole Ackerman, Crandall scored on a double steal.
New York Mills concluded the scoring with the final run in the seventh.
Ackerman’s single in the fifth was the only other hit for the Panthers. Harley Wellman started and took the loss, allowing six runs in 4 ⅓ innings. Chaise Persons pitched the next 1 ⅔ innings before Noah Morris pitched the seventh.
The win lifted New York Mills’ record to 14-2. The Eagles were rated No. 4 in the latest state Class A poll.

Frazee holds on
Frazee used a five-run fourth inning to take the lead and held on for an 9-8 victory in a battle of Section 8AA rivals at Frazee on Tuesday, May 18.
Frazee opened the scoring with a run in the second before the Panthers claimed a 3-1 lead in the third. Persons walked and Hartig reached on an error before a two-run double by Brody Hagen and another error gave Park Rapids the lead.
The Hornets responded by scoring three times in the bottom of that inning, but Park Rapids retaliated with a three-run fourth. Jaxson Lund walked and Nick Michaelson singled. With two outs, Isaiah Olson lined a two-run single and Hagen had an RBI single to give the Panthers a 6-4 edge.
After a five-run bottom of the fourth put Frazee back in front, the Panthers attempted a late rally by scoring twice in the seventh. Olson walked and Hagen singled. A run-scoring grounder by Eischens and a sacrifice fly by Crandall concluded the scoring.
Hagen went 3 for 3 with two runs and three RBI and Michaelson went 2 for 3 to account for five of the Panthers’ six hits. Noah Larson started and took the loss as the Panthers fell to 1-4 in section games and 4-12 overall. Frazee improved to 5-9 against section opponents and 5-11 overall.
