Nolan Haataja had six hits, scored six runs and allowed only one hit in eight innings pitched in leading the Menahga baseball team to a pair of home victories.
Haataja went 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBI in the Braves’ 14-4 six-inning victory over Pine River-Backus on Monday, May 17. Haataja also went 3 for 3 with three runs and threw a one-hitter over six innings as Menahga shut out Ottertail Central in a Park Region Conference game on Tuesday, May 18.
PR-B jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Braves took control by scoring four runs in the second and seven runs in the sixth. An RBI single by Henry Salmen, a double by Charlie Hodge and a two-run single by Ethan Hendrickson sparked the four-run second while Haataja’s two-run double, Ivan Anderson’s RBI single and Hodge’s two-run double ignited the seven-run sixth that ended the game via the 10-run rule. Eddie Salmen added an RBI single during a two-run fifth.
Anderson (2 for 4, two RBI), Henry Salmen (2 for 4, two runs, two RBI) and Hodge (3 for 4, two runs, two RBI) led Menahga’s 12-hit attack. Isaiah Usher allowed three runs on five hits over three innings, Aaron Pietila gave up one run on two hits and Haataja struck out five in two innings as PR-B fell to 12-4 on the season.
In the win over OTC, Pietila’s two-run single and Hendrickson’s RBI single sparked a four-run second while Anderson’s RBI single in the third and two-run triple in the fifth concluded the scoring. The Braves finished with eight hits.
Haataja walked two and struck out eight over six innings for the win with Hodge finishing up. The win lifted Menahga to 8-4 in conference games and 11-4 overall while OTC fell to 1-9 in the conference and 2-12 overall.
