Park Rapids’ Marcus Benson and Spencer Fritze helped the South Dakota State University men’s swimming and diving team claim runner-up honors at the Summit League Championships at Fargo on April 15-17.
Benson competed in four swimming events while Fritze competed in two diving events as the Jackrabbits compiled 827.50 points at the conference meet. South Dakota led the five-team field with 915.50 points with Denver (575.50), Eastern Illinois (447) and Valparaiso (405.50) following SDSU.
Benson capped off his freshman season by placing third in both the 100 backstroke (49.98) and 200 backstroke (1:50.60) and ninth in the 200 individual medley (1:55.01). Benson clocked a 50.58 split in the backstroke on SDSU’s 400 medley relay team that clocked a 3:29.12 in an exhibition race.
Fritze placed fifth in 1-meter diving with 270.65 points and sixth in 3-meter diving with 276.10 points.
The Jackrabbits posted a 2-4 record in dual meets during the regular season.
In the season opener on Jan. 17-18, St. Cloud State defeated SDSU 108-97. Fritze took first on the 1-meter board with 287.90 points and was second on the 3-meter board with 248.55 points. Benson clocked a 25.36 split in the backstroke on the 200 medley relay team that placed third in 1:40.81 and had a 53.38 split as a member of the fifth-place 400 freestyle relay team that clocked a 3:22.85. Benson also finished third as a member of the 400 medley relay team (3:43.35) and in the 200 backstroke (2:00.71).
In a 155-87 loss to South Dakota and a 166-65 win over Iowa Central at the USD Quad on Jan. 29-30, Benson’s split of 25.01 in the backstroke helped SDSU finish second in the 200 medley relay in 1:36.80 and his split of 48.87 helped the Jackrabbits to a time of 3:1723 for fourth place in the 400 freestyle relay. Benson also finished third in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.27. Fritze was fifth on the 1-meter board with 246.70 points and sixth on the 3-meter board with 198.40 points.
Fritze took first on the 1-meter board with 296.63 points and was fourth on the 3-meter board with 233.85 points in SDSU’s 163-80 loss to South Dakota on Feb. 12. Benson was third in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.13 and clocked a 27.83 split in the backstroke as SDSU took third in 1:51.20 in the 200 medley relay.
Benson won the 100 backstroke in 54.67 and led off the winning 200 medley relay that clocked a 1:38.22 in a 155-107 victory over Iowa Central Community College on Feb. 20. Benson also placed third in the 200 backstroke in 2:03.51 and swam on the 200 freestyle relay team that placed fourth in 1:31.54. Fritze had exhibition scores of 255.35 on the 1-meter and 241.05 on the 3-meter boards.
In a 143-100 loss to South Dakota on March 13, Benson won the 200 backstroke in 1:27.72, had a 54.20 split in the backstroke on the 400 medley relay team that placed fifth in 3:40.77 and had a 50.57 split as a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that finished sixth in 3;22.17. Fritze was the runner-up on the 3-meter board with 291.00 points and took fifth on the 1-meter board with 257.78 points.
The Jackrabbits capped off the regular season by competing at the Coyote Invitational on March 26-27. Benson was third in the 200 individual medley in 1:59.21 and 12th in the 100 individual medley in 55.35 while Fritze finished fourth in both diving events with 251.95 points (1 meter) and 271.75 points (3 meter).
