A 10-run fifth inning sealed the Nevis baseball team’s 17-1 Northland Conference victory at Laporte on Monday, May 10.
Dawson McGee (3 for 4, four RBI), Cain Mitchell (3 for 3, four runs, one RBI), Dan Aman (2 for 3, three RBI) and Ward Davis (2 for 4) led the Tigers’ 13-hit attack. Eli Klimek earned the win, allowing one hit and six waks while striking out six in four innings. Davis struck out two in the fifth.
Nevis, which was rated No. 10 in the latest state Class A poll, improved to 8-0 in conference play and 11-1 overall. Laporte fell to 2-6 in the conference and 2-7 overall.
“The defense played well, (making) some good plays behind our pitchers,” said Nevis head coach Larry Franck. “We need to keep working on the fundamentals, such as baserunning and plate discipline.”
Braves rout Pillager
A nine-run third inning propelled the Menahga baseball team to a 14-1 five-inning victory over Pillager in a Park Region Conference game at Menahga on Monday, May 10.
Four errors, Ivan Anderson’s RBI triple, Sam Jackola’s RBI single, Henry Salmen’s two-run double and Jack Pietila’s two-run single sparked the third inning that gave the Braves a 10-1 lead. Menahga scored the final four runs in the fourth.
Ethan Hendrickson (1 for 2, two runs, one RBI), Pietila (1 for 4, one run, three RBI), Henry Salmen (2 for 2, one run, three RBI), Eddie Salmen (1 for 3), Anderson (1 for 1, two runs), Jackola (1 for 1, two runs) and Charlie Hodge (1 for 2, two runs) led Menahga’s eight-hit offensive attack. Nolan Haataja went the distance for the win, allowing four hits while striking out eight.
The Braves improved to 6-3 in the conference and 8-3 overall while Pillager fell to 4-5 in Park Region games and 4-8 overall.
