After splitting a Mid-State Conference doubleheader with Crosby-Ironton, the Park Rapids baseball team dropped a Section 8AA game to Thief River Falls to fall to 3-9 on the season.

The Panthers shut out Crosby-Ironton 6-0 in the first game before the Rangers overcame a 9-3 deficit to salvage a split with a 14-11 victory in the second game at Crosby on May 6.

Thief River Falls used a six-run second inning to spark a 10-4 win over the Panthers at Bemidji State University on Monday, May 10.

Panthers split

The Panthers managed only two hits in the first game against C-I, but took advantage of five errors and four walks to pull off the win.

A walk to Ethan Eischens and two errors gave Park Rapids a 2-0 lead in the first inning before three walks, three errors and a hit batter led to the final four runs in the seventh. With two outs and two runners on base thanks to an error and a walk to Cole Ackerman, Eischens and Josh Crandall walked and Jaxson Lund was hit by a pitch to bring in two runs. Two errors led to the other two runs.

Singles by Ackerman in the fifth and Eischens in the sixth were the only hits for the Panthers. Larson earned the win by scattering six hits and two walks while striking out five.

In the second game, the Rangers rallied by scoring twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and eight times in the sixth.

Singles by Ackerman, Isaiah Olson, Crandall and Lund along with a double by Harley Wellman gave Park Rapids a 4-0 lead in the first before singles by Olson and Nick Michaelson, three walks and two errors made it 6-0 in the second.

After C-I scored three runs in the third, the Panthers countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning when an error and two walks set up a bases-clearing double by Eischens. James Hartig singled and scored on two walks and a hit batter in the fifth as Park Rapids led 10-6. A walk, a single by Wellman and an error produced the final run in the sixth. Two-out singles by Lund and Michaelson in the seventh capped off Park Rapids’ 11-hit attack.

Olson (2 for 3, three runs), Lund (2 for 4), Michaelson (2 for 5), Wellman (2 for 3), Hartig (three runs) and Ackerman (two runs) led Park Rapids’ offense. Lund took the loss in relief.

C-I improved to 1-7-1 in the conference and 3-8 overall while the Panthers fell to 3-7 in Mid-State games.

Prowlers prevail

Thief River Falls combined 12 hits with four Park Rapids errors to improve to 4-1 against section opponents.

Singles by Ackerman, Olson and Lund gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the first before singles by Olson, Eischens and Crandall led to another run in the third. Hartig was hit by a pitch while singles by Brody Hagen, Olson and Eischens produced the final two runs in the seventh.

Olson went 3 for 4 with two runs and Eischens went 2 for 4 as Park Rapids had nine hits. Olson took the loss.
