While the extra-base hits at the plate continued for the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team, errors in the field returned and resulted in extra at bats that propelled Pequot Lakes to a Mid-State Conference doubleheader sweep on Monday, May 3.
Pequot Lakes capitalized on seven errors to score five unearned runs in an 8-4 win in the opener before eight more errors helped the Patriots complete the sweep with a 17-3 win in six innings in the second game.
Ellie Ulvin scored on Natalie Harvey’s bunt as the Panthers tied the opener at 1-1 in the second inning. Five errors gave Pequot Lakes an 8-1 lead in the third before the Panthers concluded the scoring with single runs in three of the final four innings. Shailyn Pachel singled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and followed with a solo home run in the sixth. Abby Morris doubled and scored on an error in the seventh.
Pachel went 2 for 2 to pace Park Rapids’ seven-hit attack. Chloe Tretbar took the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and six walks with six strikeouts in six innings.
In the second game, Morgan Eckes’ three-run homer in the first set the tone as the Patriots belted out 18 hits while scoring five times in the second and eight times in the sixth.
Tori Weaver walked and scored on Tretbar’s two-run homer in the first and Morris blasted a solo homer in the third to account for Park Rapids’ three runs. Morris and Weaver both went 2 for 3 as the Panthers were held to six hits. Allison Offerdahl started and took the loss by allowing 13 runs (six earned) on 14 hits and four walks over 5 ⅓ innings.
Pequot Lakes improved to 6-0 in conference play and 9-4 overall while the Panthers fell to 4-4 in Mid-State games and 4-5 overall.
