Frazee saw a 16-point advantage in the first half get whittled away before holding on for a 67-58 victory over the Park Rapids boys basketball team at the Area High School gym on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Justin Courneya (9) and Broden Fleisher (6) combined for 15 points as the Hornets claimed a 30-14 lead. After two jumpers by Nick Michaelson and a layup by Logan Jackson made it 32-20 with 1:53 to play in the first half, Frazee pushed the lead to 36-20 before 3-pointers by Noah Morris and Isaiah Olson in the final 39 seconds cut the gap to 36-26 at the intermission.
Fleisher opened the second half with a layup, but the Panthers responded with a 10-0 run as a 3-pointer and two layups by Michaelson along with a 3-pointer by Parker Harmon closed the gap to 38-36 with 13:55 to play.
Frazee opened the margin to 55-45 with 8:02 remaining despite a basket off a rebound by Michaelson, two layups by Jackson, and a jumper by Morris. A jumper by Michaelson, a 3-pointer by James Hartig, and layups by Zach Van Batavia and Jackson cut the margin to 58-54 with 4:28 to play before consecutive jumpers by Jackson made it 63-58 with 1:40 remaining. Frazee’s defense didn’t allow another point.
Michaelson’s 23 points and Jackson’s 12 points led the Panthers, who fell to 2-2 against Section 8AA teams and 2-8 overall.
Fleischer (18), Jack Courneya (14), Justin Courneya (12) and George Flynn (11) hit double figures as the Hornets evened their record against section opponents at 5-5 and their overall record at 6-6.
