It was another defensive battle between Menahga and Wadena-Deer Creek in a Park Region Conference girls basketball game at Menahga on Friday, Feb. 19.

In the first meeting between these two teams this season, Menahga prevailed 41-21 on Jan. 19. The rematch was almost identical as the Braves posted a 40-22 victory.

Three layups by Janie Tormanen and a jumper by Allie Pfeifer gave the Braves a 9-0 lead. Two more inside baskets by Tormanen were offset by a pair of 3-pointers by Summer Pettit as Menahga held a 13-8 lead with 3:10 to play in the first half. Another layup by Tormanen and a three-point play off a steal by Amanda Lake gave the Braves an 18-10 lead at the intermission.

A 3-pointer by Martha Peterson and a jumper by Tormanen pushed Menahga’s lead to 25-13. After the Wolverines cut the gap to 25-17, a jumper by Addie Pinoniemi and back-to-back 3-pointers by Peterson and Timbr Berttunen extended Menahga’s advantage to 33-17. Layups by Tormanen and Berttunen and a layup off a steal by Lela Peterson concluded the scoring.

Tormanen finished with 18 points and eight rebounds while Berttunen hauled down nine rebounds. Pinoniemi dished out three assists while Lake and Lela Peterson had four steals each as the Braves improved to 6-1 in the conference and 8-1 overall.

W-DC fell to 4-6 in conference play and 4-8 overall. Henning tops the conference standings at 9-0.

W-DC boys win

Zachary Shaw scored 28 points and Aiden Larson tallied a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds to spark Wadena-Deer Creek to a 72-58 victory over the Menahga boys basketball team at Wadena on Thursday, Feb. 18.

Two 3-pointers by Nick Wurdock, a 3-pointer by Charlie Hodge, and layups by Hodge and Jared Tolkkinen gave Menahga a 13-4 lead. Three 3-pointers by Payton Rondestvedt sparked a 21-2 run as the Wolverines claimed a 25-15 advantage. Layups by Andreas Aho and Ryan Tolkkinen, a jumper by Christian Johnson, and a 3-pointer by Hodge cut the gap to 29-26 before another 3-pointer by Rondestvedt gave W-DC a 32-26 lead at the half.

A layup by Alec Aho was followed by a 3-pointer and a pair of layups by Hodge as Menahga cut the gap to 38-36. Three 3-pointers and a pair of layups by Shaw sparked a 32-14 run as the Wolverines claimed a 70-50 lead. Wurdock and Hodge hit 3-pointers for Menahga during that stretch. Three-pointers by Wurdock and Bodie Berttunen and a jumper by Johnson concluded the scoring for the Braves.

Hodge’s 18 points, five steals and four assists led the Braves. Wurdock added 14 points and nine rebounds while Ryan Tolkkinen had six rebounds and joined Wurdock with three assists as Menahga fell to 1-4 in the conference and 1-6 overall. The Braves made 9 of 37 3-point shots.

Rondestvedt also hit double figures with 17 points as the Wolverines improved to 5-3 against Park Region opponents and 6-4 overall. W-DC went 11 for 25 on 3-pointers to offset 20 turnovers.
