Katie Sagen, Kali Oelschlager and Aleah Tabbert combined for 23 kills in leading Walker-Hackensack-Akeley to a 3-0 win over the Nevis volleyball team in a Northland Conference match at Walker on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

Sagen had nine kills while Oelschlager and Tabbert pounded down seven kills each in the Wolves’ 25-16, 27-25, 25-19 victory.

Three kills by Makenna Frazier, two kills by Mya Stacey and a kill by Addison Lindow kept Nevis within 19-15 in Set 1 before W-H-A closed with a 6-1 run. Kayli Bessler and Sadie Thurner served aces for the Tigers in the opening set.

Lindow served an ace and six points while Thurner had a pair of kills as Nevis claimed a 7-1 lead to start Set 2. Two kills by Frazier, kills by Lindow and Ava Isaacson, and an ace serve by Thurner kept the Tigers in front 16-10. A pair of kills by Marley Mitchell and a kill by Frazier gave Nevis a 21-17 edge before the Wolves rallied to take a 22-21 lead. A kill by Lindow tied the set at 24-24 before W-H-A prevailed.

Frazier’s three kills and a pair of kills by Thurner gave the Tigers an 8-5 lead in Set 3. A kill by Lindow and two kills by Frazier kept Nevis within 18-16 before the Wolves closed out the match with a 7-3 run.

Frazier’s 11 kills, Stacey’s 19 set assists, Maggie Carrier’s 19 digs and Lindow’s 15 digs led the Tigers, who fell to 1-1 in conference play and 3-2 overall. Nevis had 24 kills and 25 hitting errors in the match.

Oelschlager and Allyson Sea served three aces each while Elizabeth Naugle had 19 digs as W-H-A improved to 3-0 in the conference and 7-1 overall.

Patriots prevail

Lydia Hubbard pounded down 13 kills in leading Pequot Lakes to a 3-0 win over Nevis at the Tiger Arena on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Kate Bolz-Andolshek (9), Maci Martini (8) and Elle Kratochvil (7) combined for 24 kills in the Patriots’ 25-13, 25-13, 25-13 victory.

Nevis jumped out to a 7-3 lead in Set 1 before Hubbard served six straight points to give the Patriots a 10-7 edge. Frazier served an ace while Lindow and Isaacson had kills as the Tigers stayed within 13-12 before Bolz-Andolshek followed with an 8-0 service run to give the Patriots a 22-12 advantage. Lindow ended that run with a kill, but Pequot Lakes won the next three points to win the opening set.

Two service points by Thurner along with a block by Bessler gave theTigers a 7-4 lead in Set 2. Kills by Bessler and Thurner kept Nevis within 14-10 before Phoebe Glenn served six straight points as the Patriots took control. Pequot Lakes followed a kill by Frazier by closing out that set.

Hubbard served the Patriots to an early 5-0 lead in Set 3. Frazier’s three kills, a tip and a kill by Mitchell, and a winning push and an ace serve by Lindow led the Tigers as Pequot Lakes maintained a 22-13 advantage before closing out the match.

Frazier’s seven kills, Stacey’s 14 set assists and Carrier’s 12 digs led the Tigers, who had 17 kills and 18 hitting errors in the match.

Pequot Lakes, which was rated No. 9 in the latest state Class AA poll, finished with 41 kills in improving to 7-0.

Frazier’s 14 kills helped the Tigers overcome 21 hitting errors and 12 service errors in a 3-0 conference win over Northome-Kelliher on Nov. 6.

Lindow (9) and Bessler (7) combined for 16 kills while Thurner, Lindow and Frazier served two aces each as the Tigers served 10 aces in the match. Stacey set up 29 of the Tigers’ 34 kills while Carrier (13), Thurner (11), Lindow (9), Stacey (8) and Frazier (7) combined for 48 digs in Nevis’ 25-23, 25-12, 25-22 victory.

The loss dropped the Mustangs to 0-2 in conference matches and 5-3 overall.
