The Menahga volleyball team defeated Verndale in a Park Region Conference match at Verndale on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

Menahga improved to 2-4 in conference matches and 3-4 overall with the 25-22, 16-25, 25-19, 25-21 victory.

Tess Jones had 12 kills and Mallory Uselman had 26 digs for the Pirates, who fell to 2-5 in the conference and overall.

Pillager prevails

Sadie Hopman’s 14 kills and six blocks led Pillager to a marathon 3-2 win over the Braves at Pillager on Monday, Nov. 9.

Julianna Ewald served six aces and Tessa Danielson served five aces in leading the Huskies to a 25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13 conference victory.

Pillager jumped out to a 12-4 lead in Set 1. Maryn Pinoniemi and Allie Pfeifer served aces while Amanda Lake and Janie Tormanen had two kills apiece for the Braves in the opening set.

Pinoniemi’s four kills, Tormanen’s three kills and two ace serves, and Elly Hillukka’s two kills led the Braves in Set 2.

Five kills by Tormanen, two kills and a pair of ace serves by Pinoniemi, and two kills apiece by Hillukka and Lake sparked Menahga in Set 3.

Tormanen, Pinoniemi and Hillukka had three kills each for the Braves in Set 4.

A pair of kills by Michaela Skoog and ace serves by Julia Besonen and Pinoniemi gave Menahga a 12-10 edge in Set 5. A kill by Tormanen tied the set at 13-13 before Pillager served out the match.

Tormanen (15), Pinoniemi (9) and Hillukka (9) combined for 33 of the Braves’ 43 kills while Pinoniemi (6), Besonen (4) and Tormanen (3) combined for 13 of Menahga’s 17 ace serves. Lake had 32 set assists while Allie Pfeifer (22), Pinoniemi (16) and Lake (12) had double digits in digs. The Braves had 43 kills and 17 ace serves while committing 34 hitting errors and 21 service errors in the match.

Pillager, which overcame 27 hitting errors and nine service errors, improved to 1-6 in the conference and overall.

Henning sweeps

Megan Rinicker’s 18 kills powered Henning to a 3-0 conference win over the Braves on Nov. 5.

Ellie Dague added eight kills in the Hornets’ 25-8, 25-12, 25-8 victory.

Tormanen’s four kills and double digits digs by Pfeifer (15) and Pinoniemi (10) led the Braves.

Henning, which was rated No. 6 in the latest state Class A poll, improved to 8-0 in the conference and 9-0 overall.
