Lydia Fellerman posted a double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs in leading Aitkin to a 3-0 Mid-State Conference win over the Park Rapids volleyball team at the Area High School gym on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
Rae Nyberg’s eight kills, Teagan Piecek’s seven kills, Noelle Jones’ three blocks, and three ace serves apiece by Lauren Ratz and Ally Ehnstrom also aided the Gobblers’ 25-17, 25-13, 25-23 win. Aitkin defeated the Panthers 25-15, 25-10, 25-15 in the season opener.
A pair of blocks by Sydney Lange; kills by Riley Pike, Peyten Sherk and Quinn Hunter; and an ace serve by Pike gave Park Rapids a 7-4 lead to start Set 1. A 5-0 service run by Ratz gave Aitkin a 10-7 advantage before kills by Sherk and Chloe Tretbar tied the set at 11-11. The Gobblers followed a tip by Hunter with a 9-1 run to claim a 21-13 advantage. Sherk and Tretbar had kills for the Panthers in the late going as Aitkin won the opening set.
The Gobblers took charge in Set 2 by jumping out to leads of 5-0 and 12-3. Kills by Lange and Pike kept the Panthers within 17-10 before Aitkin closed the set with an 8-3 run.
Ehnstrom served Aitkin to a 6-0 lead to start Set 3. A block by Abby Felts, kills by Hunter and Felts, and an ace serve by Pike cut the gap to 11-9 before Keely Peterson served the Panthers to a 13-11 lead. Felts and Hunter had kills during that run while Tretbar contributed a block. Aitkin went on a 10-1 run to claim a 21-14 edge before Felts served an ace, Hunter had a tip and Tarynn Arola pounded down a kill to make it 21-18. A kill by Pike, a combined block by Lange and Tretbar, and an ace serve by Pike pulled Park Rapids to within 24-23 before the Gobblers closed out the match.
The win lifted Aitkin to 3-1 in conference matches and 5-3 overall. Pequot Lakes tops the conference standings at 6-0 while Staples-Motley is also 3-1. Detroit Lakes (2-2), Crosby-Ironton (2-5) and Park Rapids (0-7) follow. The Panthers’ overall record dropped to 0-10.
Patriots now 8-0
Lydia Hubbard’s 12 kills and five ace serves led Pequot Lakes to a 3-0 conference win over the Panthers at Pequot Lakes on Monday, Nov. 9.
Kate Bolz-Andolshek’s 11 kills and three blocks, Maci Martini’s eight kills and four ace serves, Ella Kratchovil’s seven kills and three blocks, and Ella Pfeffer’s four ace serves also aided the Patriots’ 25-17, 25-12, 25-6 victory in a match that was originally postponed on Oct. 20.
Park Rapids used an ace serve by Peterson to claim an 11-10 lead and battled to a 16-16 tie in Set 1 before the Patriots closed with a 9-1 run. Pequot Lakes controlled the next two sets, building a 14-4 lead in Set 2 and jumping out to a 13-1 lead in Set 3.
Pequot Lakes, which was rated No. 9 in the latest state Class AA poll, used 39 kills and 16 ace serves to improve to 2-0 against Section 8AA opponents. The Panthers fell to 0-7 against section opponents.
