After missing the last two games because of COVID-19 protocol, the Nevis football team returned to the gridiron and rallied for a 41-34 victory over Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal at Ulen on Friday, Nov. 6.
Derek Lindow rushed 11 times for 121 yards and four touchdowns and completed 9 of 13 passes for 158 yards and another score in leading the Tigers in this game between Section 6 9-man teams.
The Titans scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter and on a 3-yard run in the second quarter to claim a 14-0 lead.
Lindow’s 43-yard TD run and extra-point kick made it 14-7 with 6:23 to play in the first half. Jon Rice hauled in a 17-yard TD pass from Lindow, who kicked the extra point, to tie the game at 14-14 with 47 seconds remaining before halftime. NCE/UH carried a 20-14 lead into the intermission on a 45-yard pass play on the final play of the first half.
Nevis took control of this game by scoring 27 points in the third quarter.
Lindow followed a 10-yard TD run at the 10:28 mark with a 48-yard TD scamper at the 8:13 mark as the Tigers led 28-20. After a 48-yard pass play pulled the Titans to within 28-26 at the 7:14 mark, Ian Ahrendt returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards to give Nevis a 34-26 lead with 7:02 left in the third quarter. Lindow’s 2-yard TD run and extra-point kick pushed the Tigers’ lead to 41-26 with 39 seconds to play in the third quarter.
The Titans concluded the scoring with a 2-yard TD run with 8:29 to play.
The Tigers finished with 348 yards in offense with Ahrendt adding 69 yards rushing on 12 carries. Cain Mitchell caught five passes for 65 yards and Rice had two receptions for 78 yards.
Defensively, Mitchell made eight solo tackles, Dawson Andress had seven solo tackles, Brody Johnson had six solo tackles and Ethan Lewis made five solo stops. Reese Kline assisted on eight tackles, Johnson assisted on six tackles and Ahrendt had five assisted tackles. Mitchell accounted for Nevis’ lone turnover with an interception.
The win lifted Nevis to 1-1 against section opponents and 1-2 overall while NCE/UH fell to 1-2 in section games and 3-2 overall. Win-E-Mac (4-1), Blackduck (4-1) and Fertile-Beltrami (3-1) top the section standings.
Nevis will conclude the regular season by hosting Blackduck on Thursday (Nov. 12) with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The section playoffs will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
