After a three-week layoff, the Nevis volleyball team returned to the court and coasted to a 3-0 win at Aitkin on Monday, Nov. 2.
The Tigers served 12 aces and pounded down 40 kills in the 25-16, 25-13, 25-9 victory. Nevis’ only other match this season was a 3-0 win over Mahnomen-Waubun on Oct. 12.
Aitkin jumped out to a 4-2 lead in Set 1 before Makenna Frazier served four straight points to give the Tigers a 7-4 advantage. Addison Lindow had two kills, Ava Isaacson had a kill and Frazier served an ace during that run. Kills by Kayli Bessler and Isaacson made it 10-6 before Sadie Thurner followed another kill by Bessler by serving three straight aces. A pair of kills by Frazier and kills by Lindow and Bessler extended the lead to 19-8. Two kills by Lindow and kills by Marley Mitchell and Isaacson closed out that set.
Lindow served three aces and Frazier had a kill as the Tigers opened Set 2 with a 9-0 advantage. Three more kills by Frazier and a kill by Isaacson kept Nevis in front 15-3. Two kills apiece by Isaacson and Lindow along with kills by Frazier and Bessler gave the Tigers a 19-10 edge. Three kills by Frazier and kills by Mitchell and Isaacson ended that set.
Three kills by Frazier and three service points by Bessler sparked Nevis to a 4-0 lead to start Set 3. Kills by Maggie Carrier, Frazier and Isaacson and an ace serve by Frazier made it 8-2. A pair of kills by Bessler and an ace serve by Thurner kept Nevis in front 12-8 before LIndow served two aces and Frazier contributed a kill to extend the lead to 16-8. Bessler ended the match by following a kill with eight service points, including an ace. Frazier had a kill and teamed with Mitchell for a block during that match-ending 9-0 run.
Frazier led the way with 15 kills while Isaacson (8), Lindow (7) and Bessler (7) combined for 22 kills. Thurner and Lindow served four aces each with Lindow (16) and Bessler (13) combining for 29 service points. Stacey tallied 35 set assists. Defensively, Thurner had 12 digs while Lindow and Carrier had eight digs each.
Lauren Ratz’s five kills, Anna Carlton’s 19 digs and Madison Hamilton’s 18 set assists led the Gobblers, who fell to 3-3 on the season.
The Tigers will travel to Kelliher-Northome on Friday (Nov. 6) and will host Pequot Lakes on Saturday (Nov. 7) at 1:30 p.m.
