Sadie Thurner’s 13 digs and Makenna Frazier’s 10 kills sparked the Nevis volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Mahnomen-Waubun in the season opener at the Tiger Arena on Monday, Oct. 12.
The Tigers used strong finishes in all three sets to spark the 25-18, 25-22, 25-18 win.
A kill by Frazier and an ace serve by Maggie Carrier gave Nevis an 8-7 lead in Set 1 before Thurner served an ace and Frazier had a kill and a winning tip during a 7-0 run that pushed the advantage to 15-7. After two kills and a block by Frazier made it 18-9, the Thunderbirds responded with an 8-0 spurt to cut the gap to 18-17. Frazier served an ace and Carrier had a kill as the Tigers went on a 7-1 run to close out the set.
Mahnomen-Waubun jumped out to an 11-7 lead to start Set 2 despite a kill by Marley Mitchell, a block by Mya Stacey and Kayli Bessler, and a kill by Bessler. A block by Frazier and Isaacson kept Nevis within 11-9 before Thurner served Nevis to a 14-12 advantage with the aid of two kills by Frazier and a kil by Carrier. A tip by Stacey and a block by Isaacson helped tie the set at 20-20 before a kill by Carrier sparked a 5-2 run to close out that set.
A tip by Mitchell, a kill by Frazier and a kill by Isaacson led the Tigers to a 7-7 tie to start Set 3. Thurner served an ace and Frazier had a kill to give Nevis an 11-8 edge before Isaacson served the Tigers to a 15-8 cushion behind another kill by Frazier. Kills by Mitchell and Bessler kept the lead at 19-15 before a kill by Bessler and an ace serve by Carrier closed out the match.
Bessler and Carrier chipped in five kills each while Thurner, Frazier and Carrier served two aces apiece. Isaacson (8) and Frazier (7) combined for 15 digs while Stacey tallied 17 set assists as Nevis put 62 of 74 serves in play with eight aces and pounded down 25 kills to go along with 44 digs.
