Midway needed a dramatic rally in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon to keep its amateur baseball winning streak alive.
Sam Beck delivered three key RBI in the late going as the Snurdbirds rallied for a 6-5 win over New York Mills at Midway on July 19. That win extended Midway's winning streak to six games in a row.
New York Mills, which trailed 2-0 after three innings, held a 5-2 lead before Beck’s two-run home run made it 5-4 in the eighth inning. Ray Mueller led off the ninth with a solo homer to tie the game at 5-5 before Beck drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the winning run.
Zach Etter led the Snurdbirds’ 11-hit attack by going 4 for 5 while Stetson Burkman went 2 for 5. Preston Riewer (1 for 4 with an RBI), Beck (1 for 3 with two runs), Chris Baso (1 for 3) and Jake Lund (1 for 4, one run, one RBI) had Midway’s other hits. Burkman started and gave up five runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Lund earned the win, allowing four hits while striking out five in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Sam Champa went 4 for 5 with a pair of RBI and Brett Dormanen went 2 for 5 with two RBI and pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the win in leading the Snurdbirds past Staples on Saturday, July 18.
Midway scored twice in the first, three times in the fourth, twice in the fifth and three times in the eighth. Mueller (2 for 2 with a run and an RBI) and Cory Odland (2 for 5) also aided Midway’s 13-hit attack. Riewer scored three times and Baso scored twice as the Snurdbirds drew 10 walks. Riewer, Etter and Ike Kyllonen added a hit each while Kyllonen and Quincy Jantz each scored a run and had an RBI. Riewer and Etter also drove in a run apiece while Champa and Dormanen scored the other runs.
Etter started and allowed two unearned runs on one hit and one walk with six strikeouts in four innings before Dormanen pitched the next four innings and gave up three hits with four strikeouts. Kyllonen gave up one hit and struck out one in the ninth. The win lifted Midway's Lake & Pine League record to 4-1 and its overall mark to 6-3.
Midway will host Bluffton in a battle of the top teams in Region 14C this Sunday (July 26) at 1:30 p.m.
