Panthers get No. 4 section seed

Losing twice to Pequot Lakes and Crookston during the regular season dropped the Park Rapids girls tennis team to the No. 4 seed for the Section 8A tournament.

The Panthers, who finished the regular season with a 12-5 record, will open the section tournament Tuesday against No. 5 East Grand Forks at 12:30 p.m. at the Grand Forks Center Court Fitness Club. The Panthers defeated EGF 6-1 during the regular season.

No. 8 Perham hosts No. 9 New York Mills in a first-round match Monday. The other quarterfinal matches Tuesday pit No. 1 Staples-Motley hosting Perham or New York Mills, No. 3 Crookston playing No. 6 Roseau at Grand Forks, and No. 2 Pequot Lakes hosting No. 7 Wadena-Deer Creek.

Grand Forks will host the section semifinals and finals Friday starting at 8 a.m. The first round of the Section 8A individual tournament will also be held Friday at Grand Forks. The individual tournament will conclude next Saturday with quarterfinals, semifinals and finals in both singles and doubles.

Park Rapids' Christina Smith and Julia Renner received the No. 1 seed in doubles while Sarena Kinkel and Lindsey Girtz received the No. 9 seed. In singles, Julia Smith received the No. 7 seed and Charity Ridlon received the No. 12 seed.

The team champion and the champion and runner-up in both singles and doubles advance to the state Class A tournament.

Panthers win title at TRF

The Panthers went undefeated at three positions to win the title at last Thursday's Thief River Falls Quadrangular.

Renner won all three matches at No. 2 singles, Hope Johnson went 3-0 at No. 4 singles, and Heidi Schaum and Girtz went undefeated at No. 2 doubles in this round-robin tournament to lead the Panthers to the title with 15 points. East Grand Forks finished second with 11 points while Thief River Falls (9) and Roseau (7) followed.

Christina Smith went 2-1 at No. 1 singles, Ridlon went 2-1 at No. 3 singles, and Kinkel and Julia Smith went 2-1 at No. 1 doubles to complete the Panthers' team score.

Team scores: Park Rapids 15, East Grand Forks 11, Thief River Falls 9, Roseau 7.

Panthers split at Crookston

The Panthers ended the regular season by splitting matches at Crookston last Saturday.

Crookston edged the Panthers 4-3 in the first match while Park Rapids rebounded for a 4-3 win over Roseau in the second match. That split gave the Panthers a 7-4 record against section opponents this season.

Christina Smith coasted at No. 1 singles, Julia Smith coasted at No. 3 singles, and Schaum and Girtz prevailed in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles against Crookston. Renner lost in a tiebreaker at No. 2 singles and Ridlon lost in a tiebreaker at No. 4 singles as Crookston edged the Panthers for the second time this season.

In the win over Roseau, Christina Smith, Renner and Ridlon were victorious in the top singles spots in straight sets. Jeni Simpson and Jill Simpson also won in straight sets at No. 3 doubles. Johnson lost in a tiebreaker at No. 4 singles and Schaum and Girtz lost in a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles.
