Alec Nordin’s hat trick wasn’t enough as Lake of the Woods swept the season series from the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team with a 4-3 Section 8A victory at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena on Saturday, Jan. 25.
The Bears, who defeated Park Rapids 10-3 at Baudette on Dec. 13, used goals in the final minute of the first and second periods to spark the win.
After Griffen Sonstegard opened the scoring 1:50 into the game, Nordin tied it at 1-1 with assists from Josh Kuhlman and Joey Hillukka at the 4:03 mark. LOW carried a 2-1 lead into the second period when Kajun Krause scored with 58 seconds remaining.
Hillukka set up Nordin 1:52 into the second period as the Panthers tied the game at 2-2. But LOW regained the lead on Stephen Harris’ goal at the 3:37 mark and Jack Wood’s goal with 41 seconds remaining in the period.
Nordin completed his hat trick at the 3:32 mark of the third period as Hillukka and Quincy Jantz received assists. But four penalties, including a 10-minute major, prevented the Panthers from scoring the equalizer.
Goalie Ben Strandlie finished with 38 saves as LOW held a 42-30 advantage in shots. The loss dropped Park Rapids, which went 0 for 4 on the power play, to 1-8 in section games and 4-15 overall.
LOW, which failed to score on five power-play chances, improved to 4-4 in the section and 5-12 overall.
