After facing an early 2-0 deficit, the first line of Jase Jensen, Isaac Wohlers and Tanner Barth took over as Breckenridge/Wahpeton swept the season series from the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team with an 8-5 victory at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena on Thursday, Jan. 23.
Jensen, Wohlers and Barth combined to score all eight goals and tally all 11 assists for the Blade, who posted a 6-1 win over Park Rapids on Dec. 17.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind Joshua Crandall’s goal 2:35 into the game and Jaxson Lund’s goal 44 seconds later. Joey Hillukka assisted on Crandall’s goal while Brody Hagen set up Lund’s goal.
Jensen responded by scoring the next three goals as Breckenridge/Wahpeton carried a 3-2 lead into the second period. Jensen tallied a hat trick in the first period with goals at the 7:30, 8:39 and 16:39 marks. The Panthers trailed despite having a 17-11 advantage in shots on goal.
Sam Meier assisted on a goal by Caden Opheim at the 6:04 mark of the second period as Park Rapids tied the game at 3-3. But the Blade responded with a pair of goals within 11 seconds as Barth scored at the 7:35 mark and Wohlers scored at the 7:46 mark for a 5-3 advantage.
Jensen’s power-play goal 3:29 into the third period following a five-minute major penalty on the Panthers extended the lead to 6-3. Park Rapids cut the gap to 6-4 on Reed Sharp’s goal with 2:59 to play. Hillukka and Jeron Pinoniemi assisted on that goal. The Blade responded again to seal the win with back-to-back goals by Jensen at the 15:20 and 15:36 marks for an 8-4 lead. Josh Kuhlman set up Justin Baker for the game’s final goal with 45 seconds to play.
Jensen’s five goals, Wohlers’ five assists and Barth’s four assists lifted the Blade to 11-6 this season.
Goalie Ben Strandlie made 24 saves for the Panthers, who fell to 4-14 despite holding a 34-32 edge in shots.
