Dominic Aguilar hit four 3-pointers and scored 18 points while Cody Norgren added 15 points as Fergus Falls built a 54-24 halftime lead and coasted to an 85-36 victory over the Menahga boys basketball team at Fergus Falls on Thursday, Jan. 16.
The Otters had 12 players enter the scoring column with seven different players hitting a 3-pointer in this game between new Section 8AA teams. Fergus Falls ended up hitting 10 of 25 3-pointers in the game, including going 7 for 14 to take control in the first half.
Three 3-pointers by Aguilar, three layups by Chance Fazio and a 3-pointer by Parker Jacobs gave the Otters a 21-5 advantage with 11:31 to play in the first half. Charlie Hodge hit a 3-pointer for Menahga.
A layup by Wade Berttunen, Jonah Howard’s three baskets and another 3-pointer by Hodge made it 25-16, but a 3-pointer by Jack Culbertson with 7:36 to go started a 29-5 run. Victor Aho hit a 3-pointer and Hodge scored on a layup as the Braves trailed 37-21 before Fergus Falls used a 3-pointer Norgren and three layups by Aguilar to spark a 17-0 spurt that produced a 54-21 advantage with 17 seconds showing. Hodge’s 3-pointer with :02 left made it 54-24 at the half.
Tristan Aho connected on a 3-pointer to open the second half before the Otters responded with a 19-0 run as Norgren, Fazio and Ethan Olson had two layups apiece and Jacobs hit a 3-pointer for a 73-27 lead with 10:58 to play. After a jumper by Howard and a 3-pointer by Hodge made it 75-34, 3-pointers by Jacob Spangler and Luke Newman provided an 85-34 advantage. Devan Leritz’s layup ended the scoring.
Norgen’s 21 points, Aguilar’s 20 points and Fazio’s 12 points led the Otters, who improved to 2-0 against section teams and 10-3 overall. Fergus Falls is currently seeded No. 2 in the South half of the section behind Perham’s 11-0 record.
Hodge’s 14 points and three assists and Aho’s seven rebounds and three assists led the Braves, who fell to 1-2 in section games and 6-6 overall.
