Tori Weaver and Rilee Michaelson hit two 3-pointers apiece as the Park Rapids girls basketball team built a 35-20 halftime lead in a 53-44 Mid-State Conference victory over Crosby-Ironton at Crosby on Thursday, Jan. 14.
Michaelson scored off a rebound and Weaver hit a jumper as the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Two baskets by Paige Johnson and a layup by Michaelson gave Park Rapids a 10-8 edge before Michaelson, Weaver and Hannah Morgan connected on 3-pointers as the Panthers extended their lead to 24-10. A jumper by Morgan and three inside baskets by Michaelson gave Park Rapids a 32-20 lead before Michaelson’s 3-pointer at the buzzer produced a 35-20 lead at the break.
Layups by Johnson and Michaelson made it 39-22 before the Rangers cut the gap to 40-30. A layup by Morgan and a 3-pointer by Weaver pushed the Panthers’ lead to 48-30 before C-I cut the deficit to 51-43 before free throws by Morgan and Weaver sealed the win.
Michaelson recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds while Weaver added 13 points. Johnson had seven rebounds, Abby Morris had five assists and five steals, and Weaver had four assists as the Panthers hit 6 of 15 3-pointers to improve to 6-10. The win gave Park Rapids sole possession of first place in the conference standings with a 4-1 record. Detroit Lakes is 3-1 while C-I fell to 3-2 in the conference. Pequot Lakes is also 3-2.
Lily Peterson (16) and Karli Nixon (12) scored in double figures for the Rangers, who fell to 9-5 overall.
