Crookston took advantage of a major penalty late in the second period to score three goals and break open a close game in a 7-2 victory over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team in a game between Section 8A rivals at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena on Thursday, Jan. 9.

The game was tied 2-2 before the Pirates followed a shorthanded goal with three power-play goals to pick up their first victory of the season.

The Panthers took advantage of a Crookston penalty when Alec Nordin fed Nash Mitchell for a power-play goal just 2:10 into the game. After Joey Doda scored to tie the game at 1-1 at the 12:01 mark, Joey Hillukka redirected a slap shot by Ethan Eischens at the blue line to score with just 11 seconds to play in the opening period as the Panthers led 2-1. Park Rapids scored twice on five shots as the Pirates held a 19-5 advantage in shots on goal in the first 17 minutes.

Crookston took control in the second period by scoring four goals within a span of 4:48. Jack Doda tied the game with a goal just 28 seconds into the period before following with a shorthanded goal at the 11:04 mark. The Pirates then scored three times during the five-minute major penalty for checking from behind, beginning with Jack Doda’s third goal of the game at the 12:18 mark. Joey Doda made it 5-2 at the 14:03 mark before Jack Doda scored again at the 15:52 mark. Hillukka was awarded a penalty shot after being taken down during a breakaway, but couldn’t put away the shorthanded goal as the Panthers trailed 6-2.

Ty Hamre’s goal at the 8:30 mark of the third period concluded the scoring.

Park Rapids goalie Ben Strandlie finished with 35 saves as the Pirates held a 42-23 advantage in shots. Crookston improved to 1-4 against section opponents and 1-13 overall.

RLF skates to win

Red Lake Falls used a 48-23 advantage in shots on goal and two power-play goals to spark a 7-2 win over the Panthers at the Cardin-Hunt Arena on Saturday, Jan. 11.

After Blane Schmitz’s power-play goal with 2:02 to play in the first period gave Red Lake Falls a 1-0 lead, Quincy Jantz tied the game with a goal 34 seconds later.

The Eagles took control by scoring three times in the second period. Evan Girdler scored at the 10:09 mark, Nathan Huot scored at the 10:47 mark and Zak Kennett scored at the 12:03 mark as Red Lake Falls led 4-1. The Panthers failed to score on five power-play opportunities while being outshot 19-7 in that period.

Hillukka’s goal at the 5:53 mark of the third period cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Eagles sealed the win on Fred Landman’s goal at the 12:21 mark, Ty Kennett’s goal at the 13:01 mark and Girdler’s power-play goal at the 15:34 mark.

Strandlie made 41 saves as the Panthers fell to 0-7 in section games and 3-12 overall. Red Lake Falls improved to 3-2 in section play and 9-5 overall.
