The combination of 28 kills and 11 ace serves powered the Nevis volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Cass Lake-Bena in a Northland Conference match at Cass Lake on Thursday, Sept. 12.

Makenna Frazier’s 10 kills and three ace serves apiece by Jayden Vredenburg and Maggie Carrier sparked the Tigers’ 25-17, 25-11, 25-10 victory.

Kia Heide added eight kills and eight digs and joined Frazier with two ace serves. Cora Umthun set up 24 kills with Addison Lindow and Carrier chipping in six digs apiece as Nevis improved to 1-1 in conference matches and 3-7 overall. The Tigers had only nine hitting errors to go along with seven service errors in the match.

Cass Lake-Bena fell to 0-1 in the conference and 1-7 overall. Pine River-Backus and Clearbrook-Gonvick top the Northland Conference standings with 2-0 records.

Henning sweeps Braves

Megan Rinicker and Serena Greenwood combined for 27 kills in leading Henning to a 3-0 Park Region Conference volleyball win over Menahga at Henning on Sept. 12.

Rinicker’s 14 kills and four ace serves and Greenwood’s 13 kills sparked the Hornets’ 25-22, 25-12, 25-19 victory.

Sydney Eckhoff tallied 31 set assists while Grace Nyhus served four aces and Ally Hart served three aces as Henning improved to 9-0 overall. The Hornets, who were rated No. 9 in last week’s state Class A poll, join New York Mills atop the conference standings at 2-0.

Tara Hendrickson’s eight kills, Elly Hillukka’s four kills, and Rena Pinoniemi’s four kills and seven digs led the Braves. Annie Lake had 18 set assists and five digs, Jessica Pietila had seven digs, Janie Tormanen had six digs and Maryn Pinoniemi had five digs as Menahga fell to 0-2 in conference matches and 2-4 overall. The Braves had only three service errors, but committed 20 hitting errors.
