After letting a late lead slip away in Set 1, the Park Rapids volleyball team finished strong in the next three sets for a 3-1 victory at Nevis on Thursday, Aug. 29.

The Panthers overcame 26 hitting errors and 15 service errors to remain undefeated on the season with a 24-26, 25-15, 25-19, 25-18 victory at the Tiger Arena.

In Set 1, Park Rapids held leads of 15-7, 22-17 and 24-18 before the Tigers rallied. Kills by the Panthers’ Kamree Carlson and Rilee Michaelson and an ace serve by Kendra Scholz were offset by three kills Nevis’ Kia Heide as the set was tied at 7-7. Katie Burlingame served two aces and Carlson and Katelyn Weaver had kills as the Panthers claimed a 15-7 advantage. Two kills by Makenna Frazier, a kill by Heide and an ace serve by Cora Umthun kept the Tigers within 19-13 before a tip by Weaver, two kills by Michaelson and a kill by Carlson gave Park Rapids a 24-18 lead. Maggie Carrier served an ace and seven straight points as a kill by Addison Lindow and a block by Frazier sparked the Tigers’ rally.

Kills by Scholz, Burlingame and Carlson and an ace serve by Michaelson were countered by kills by Heide, Frazier and Sadie Thurner as Set 2 was tied at 8-8. The Panthers started to pull away behind tips by Weaver and Michaelson and an ace serve by Carlson for a 17-11 advantage. Two kills by Carlson, kills by Michaelson, Kayleah Breitweser and Weaver, and a block by Weaver and Scholz evened the match.

A kill and an ace serve by Carlson, an ace serve by Weaver, and a kill by Michaelson gave the Panthers a 9-3 lead to open Set 3. Kills by Heide and Jayden Vredenburg were offset by two kills by Carlson and a kill and an ace serve by Michaelson as Park Rapids held a 13-7 edge. Two kills by Michaelson, and ace and four service points by Weaver, and a kill by Scholz extended the margin to 24-14 before a kill by Heide and an ace serve during a 4-0 service run by Thurner pulled the Tigers to within 24-19 before Michaelson ended that set with a kill.

Kills by Scholz, Michaelson, Carlson and Breitweser and an ace serve by Burlingame gave Park Rapids a 12-6 lead in Set 4. An ace serve by Umthun, a block by Frazier and Cole Mastley, and a kill by Heide kept the Tigers within 15-12 before two kills by Michaelson and a block by Michaelson and Breitweser made it 19-12. Kills by Carlson and Breitweser provided a 22-16 advantage before two kills by Scholz and a kill by Carlson ended the match.

The Panthers finished with 45 kills with Carlson (17) and Michaelson (13) leading the way. Burlingame served three aces and 16 points, Weaver served seven aces and 13 points, and Carlson served four aces and 10 points. Weaver set up 37 of those kills. Defensively, Kora Just’s 15 digs and Weaver’s 10 digs led the Panthers, who improved to 2-0 on the season.

Heide (12) and Frazier (8) combined for 20 kills with Umthun setting up 18 kills for Nevis. Frazier (9), Umthun (7), Heide (7) and Lindow (6) combined for 29 digs as the Tigers fell to 1-2 on the season.

Tigers top Braves

Heide’s 18 kills and Umthun’s 33 set assists powered the Tigers to a 25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 25-16 win at Menahga on Aug. 27.

Frazier added 10 kills and joined Thurner and Jayden Vredenburg with three ace serves. Lindow (9), Frazier (8) and Thurner (7) combined for 24 digs.

Tara Hendrickson’s 12 kills and Elly Hillukka’s seven kills and three ace serves led Menahga. Maryn Pinoniemi (9) and Lake (7) combined for 16 digs in the Braves’ season opener.
