Hubbard County Coalition of Lake Associations' (COLA) loon-monitoring program begins Friday, June 28 and runs through Monday, July 8. Volunteers are needed!

Recently, a number of Hubbard County's loon lovers were disappointed to read at the end of a terrific June 1 article that our loons were not being included in an eight-county Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) monitoring program. However, several COLA members put our heads together for our loons. The Hubbard County COLA Loon Monitoring Program now needs volunteers too across our county lakes! We'll borrow from the DNR, using some similar protocols.

Volunteers are needed for one morning between Friday, June 28 and Monday, July 8 to help count loons on the lake you live on between 5 a.m. and noon. To sign up, email Provide your contact information and the lake you plan to monitor. We'll get information back to you then on the program.

To learn more as you consider volunteering, you are welcome to stop by our loon monitoring information table from 5:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 27 at Northwoods Bank community room (handicap accessible). We'll have refreshments, too!

Our Hubbard County loons need our help to count the number of adult and juvenile loons. The baseline will help detect changes over time.

We will share the results of loon monitoring program with readers! We are hearing a BIG "thank you" loon call from across the waters of Hubbard County as you consider becoming a volunteer in our loon monitoring program.
