Hawley and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton combined for 27 hits to eliminate the Park Rapids baseball team from the Section 8AA playoffs.
Hawley used a 13-hit attack to spark an 8-1 win over the Panthers in the first game of the double-elimination portion of the tournament at Park Rapids on Thursday (May 30) while Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton pounded out 14 hits in a 16-4 five-inning victory in an elimination game. Park Rapids earned the No. 6 seed in the North while Hawley was seeded No. 7 and D-G-F was seeded No. 5.
In the first game, Hawley scored three runs in the first inning and added two runs in the fifth and seventh innings for the win. Mason Klevgaard went 4 for 4 and scored three runs, Gunnar Lawson went 3 for 4, and Trayton Cossette and Derian Gerdes both went 2 for 4 to pace the Nuggets' offense.
Park Rapids scored its lone run in the seventh on two-out singles by Ty Karger and Brendan Kruchowski and walks to Brody Hagen and Luke Dickinson.
Karger's two-out double in the first and lead-off single in the fourth and Jens Anderson's one-out single in the fifth accounted for the Panthers' other hits. Anderson started and took the loss while Tanner Hensel took over in the fifth. Those two pitchers walked two and struck out five.
D-G-F eliminated the Panthers from the playoffs by scoring two runs in the first, eight runs in the second and four runs in the third in building a 14-1 lead.
The Rebels followed Carter Kohler's two-run homer in the first by sending 13 batters to the plate in the second as five hits and five walks led to eight runs. Four more hits produced four more runs in the third before Kohler's solo homer in the fourth and three more hits in the fifth made it 16-1.
Park Rapids scored a run in the first on singles by Gabe Bagstad and Tristin Persons and an error before an error and a walk to Persons set up a three-run homer by Karger in the fifth.
Brendan Kruchowski, whose lead-off single in the fourth was the Panthers' other hit, started and took the loss. Isaiah Olson and Hensel finished up as those three pitchers combined to issue seven walks while striking out five.
Kohler scored three runs and Jacob Strand went 3 for 4 to lead the Rebels' offensive attack.
East Grand Forks (the No. 1 seed in the North) defeated D-G-F 16-5 and followed with a 9-4 victory over Hawley to improve to 18-4. Hawley (11-10) and D-G-F (15-8) stayed alive while the Panthers ended the season with a 6-12 record.
