It took a shutout to prevent the Midway Snurdbirds from advancing to the state Class C amateur baseball tournament.

Midway, which entered the Region 14C playoffs with a 1-13 record, won four games during the playoffs in falling one win shy of advancing to state.

The Snurdbirds kept their season alive by eliminating Staples 4-0 at Perham on Friday, Aug. 9. Midway was denied a state berth with a 7-0 loss to Perham at Perham on Saturday, Aug. 10. Bluffton defeated Perham 13-0 on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Perham to win the Region 14C title. Bluffton advanced to state by winning the Region 14C title for the first time while Perham claimed the other state berth from Region 14C.

Cory Odland threw a three-hit complete game, striking out 13 and walking six as Midway eliminated Staples.

This game was scoreless until the Snurdibirds scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning. Stetson Burkman’s two-run RBI double capped off the inning.

Chris Baso (3 for 4, one run), Preston Riewer (2 for 5, one run), Alexander Jimenez (2 for 5) and Burkman (2 for 5) led the way as Midway belted out 10 hits. Pete Marjamaa (1 for 4 with a double) had the other hit while Steve Wetterling and Sam Champa scored the other runs.

Staples entered the region tournament as the No. 2 seed in the Lake and Pine League.

Midway battled Perham, the No. 4 seed in the Hi 10 League, through five scoreless innings before the Pirates prevailed.

Both teams left the bases loaded in the third inning before Maddux Kovash’s RBI single gave Perham a 2-0 lead in the sixth. Gavin Biegler’s two-run single made it 4-0 in the seventh before Dylan Perrine’s RBI single and Dawson Stevens’ RBI double sparked a three-run eighth.

Noah Rooney gave up three hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in four innings before Nick Lindberg earned the win by allowing two hits with five strikeouts over the final five innings as the Pirates advanced to state for the first time in 13 years with a 10-11 record.

Burkman took the loss, allowing seven runs on 14 hits and five walks over eight innings. Burkman struck out four in his third complete-game effort of the region playoffs.

Sam Beck led Midway’s five-hit attack with two hits. Burkman, Odland and Riewer had the other hits for the Snurdbirds. Midway, the No. 6 seed from the Lake and Pine League, ended the season with a 5-15 record.
