As expected, the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team received the No. 6 seed and will open the Section 8A playoffs on the road.
The Panthers will begin the section playoffs with a quarterfinal game against East Grand Forks at the East Grand Forks Civic Center Thursday night (Feb. 7) at 7. East Grand Forks, which is rated No. 9 in the latest state Class A poll, received the No. 3 seed. Park Rapids enters this rematch with an 0-20 record while the Green Wave is 14-8-2.
East Grand Forks defeated the Panthers twice during the regular season by scores of 12-1 on Jan. 7 and 6-0 on Jan. 19. Park Rapids was outshot 65-10 in the first meeting and 78-11 in the second game.
In the other quarterfinal game on Feb. 7, No. 4 Detroit Lakes (6-17) hosts No. 5 Crookston (4-18-1). Warroad, the No. 1 seed, and Thief River Falls, the No. 2 seed, receive first-round byes. Warroad (24-0) is rated No. 1 in the state while Thief River Falls (15-9) holds the No. 6 spot in the state poll.
The section semifinals move to Crookston on Saturday (Feb. 9) at 4 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. The Section 8A championship game is set for Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at Crookston.
Warroad defeated East Grand Forks 3-2 in overtime in last year's section title game. Breck defeated Warroad 3-2 in overtime in the state Class A championship game.
