Panthers run away from Perham in home opener

Three impressive runs helped the Park Rapids girls basketball team defeat Perham Monday night (Dec. 3) in the home opener at the Area High School gym.

The Panthers used spurts of 13-3, 16-0 and 16-3 to spark a 75-52 victory in this game between Section 8AA South opponents.

Perham used 3-pointers by Lacy Richter, Lisa Meader and Katie Johnson to jump out to an 18-12 lead with 11:08 to play in the first half. Kaisa Coborn hit a jump shot, Paige Johnson scored off a rebound and Rilee Michaelson scored three baskets inside for the Panthers in the early going.

A layup and 3-pointer by Natalie Kinkel started a 13-3 run that gave Park Rapids a 25-21 lead at the 5:57 mark. Paige Johnson and Julia Johnson also contributed jumpers during that run.

After another 3-pointer by Katie Johnson gave the Yellowjackets a 28-27 edge at the 3:48 mark, Park Rapids closed the half with a 10-0 run as jumpers by Michaelson, Kinkel and Coborn and a 3-pointer by Kinkel produced a 37-28 advantage at the break.

Park Rapids opened the second half with a 6-0 spurt as a layup by Julia Johnson, a jumper by Coborn and a layup off a steal by Coborn made it 43-28 with 15:52 remaining.

After Rachel Muer hit a 3-pointer, Park Rapids responded with a 16-3 run as a layup by Kendra Coborn, a jumper by Kaisa Coborn, a layup and 3-pointer by Michaelson, a jumper and 3-pointer by Whitney Steffel, and a jumper by Kaisa Coborn pushed the lead to 59-34 with 10:48 to go.

Layups by Steffel, Kaisa Coborn and Michaelson, a jumper by Kaisa Coborn, two layups by Kendra Coborn and two layups by Hannah Morgan gave the Panthers a 75-47 advantage with 3:20 to play.

Kaisa Coborn and Michaelson both scored 18 points while Kinkel scored 10 points to lead the Panthers, who improved to 2-0 on the season. The Panthers forced 31 Perham turnovers as Kaisa Coborn had five steals while Kinkel, Kendra Coborn and Julia Johnson had four steals each. Michaelson led the way with eight rebounds while Steffel, Julia Johnson and Kaisa Coborn had five rebounds each. Kendra Coborn and Kaisa Coborn dished out four assists apiece.

Mesa Schultz scored 11 points and Katie Johnson added 10 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Yellowjackets, who went 6-for-25 in 3-pointers in falling to 1-1 on the season.
