Park Rapids received the No. 1 seed in the South and a first-round bye for the Section 8AA volleyball tournament.

The tournament begins Thursday (Oct. 25) with No. 4 Detroit Lakes (13-13) hosting No. 5 Staples-Motley (9-15) with the winner of that match playing at Park Rapids (21-6) Friday night (Oct. 26) at 7. In the other first-round matches on Oct. 25, No. 2 Pequot Lakes (17-9) hosts No. 7 Crosby-Ironton (12-14) and No. 3 Perham (17-10) hosts No. 6 Fergus Falls (7-20).

In the North half on Oct. 25, No. 1 Roseau (16-11) hosts No. 8 Bagley (3-19-1), No. 4 Thief River Falls (7-18) hosts No. 5 Crookston (11-13), No. 2 Hawley (13-12) hosts No. 7 East Grand Forks (4-22) and No. 3 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (11-16) hosts No. 6 Warroad (9-19). Those winners play on Oct. 26 at the high seeds.

The section semifinals will be played Oct. 30 at sites to be determined with the Section 8AA championship match set for Nov. 3 at a site to be determined. Roseau is the defending section champion.

Nevis (17-9) received the No. 3 seed in the Section 5A North B bracket and will host No. 6 Pillager (8-18) on Thursday (Oct. 25) at 7 p.m.

In the other first-round match in that bracket on Oct. 25, No. 2 Verndale (16-10) hosts No. 7 Laporte (10-12). The winner of that match plays the winner of the Nevis vs. Pillager match at 7 p.m. on Oct. 26 at the high seed.

No. 4 Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (17-8) hosts No. 5 Bertha-Hewitt (16-12) on Oct. 25 with the winner traveling to No. 1 Pine River-Backus (25-2) at 7 p.m. on Oct. 26. PR-B received the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye.

The North half of the bracket moves to Aitkin for matches on Oct. 30 with the section semifinals set for Nov. 1 at Little Falls. The Section 5A championship match will be played Nov. 3 at Little Falls.

Receiving the top seeds in the other Section 5A brackets were Ruth City (16-7) in North A, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (21-4) in South A and Royalton (19-6) in South B. Pine River-Backus won the section title last season.

Menahga (10-13) received the No. 6 seed in the North and will open the Section 5A tournament at home against No. 11 Rothsay (5-17-1) on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. The winner of that match will play at No. 3 Wadena-Deer Creek on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.

In the other first-round matches in the North half of Section 5A on Oct. 22, No. 5 Park Christian (15-8) hosts No. 12 Lake Park-Audubon (3-14-2) with the winner of that match playing at No. 4 Pelican Rapids (17-7), No. 7 Sebeka (8-16) hosts No. 10 Hillcrest Lutheran Academy (6-20-1) with the winner playing at No. 2 Barnesville (21-6), and No. 8 Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal (13-11) hosts No. 9 Frazee (6-16) with the winner playing at No. 1 New York Mills (25-2). Second-round matches will be played on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. with the next round set for Oct. 26.

Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley (22-4), Henning (20-7), Brandon-Evansville (18-6) and Underwood (16-11) received the top seeds in the South half of Section 6A. Wadena-Deer Creek is the defending section champion.
