Defensive effort lifts Titans past Tigers
Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal held Nevis' offense to only 158 yards as the Titans remained one of the state's eight undefeated 9-man football teams with a 28-0 win Friday night at Ulen.
The Titans used a 2-yard touchdown run by Tate Hoseth at the 9:20 mark of the first quarter, a 3-yard TD pass from Tate Maesse to Kale McCollum at the 5:50 mark of the second quarter and a 3-yard TD run by Noah Klemetson with 27 seconds before halftime to claim a 21-0 lead.
Maesse's 9-yard TD run with 4:23 to play in the third quarter concluded the scoring as NCE/UH improved to 3-0 against Section 6 opponents and 6-0 in District 9 West (North) play. The Titans moved up to the No. 9 spot in last week's state 9-man poll.
Luke DeWulf rushed 17 times for 55 yards and caught two passes for 34 yards to lead Nevis' offense. Reese Kline gained 39 yards on six carries and Keanu Yabandith had 31 yards on 10 attempts while Derek Lindow completed 2 of 10 passes.
DeWulf also led the defense with 10 solo tackles while Dan Mistic had eight solo tackles and Yabandith had six solo tackles. Logan Funk intercepted a pass to account for Nevis' lone turnover.
The loss dropped Nevis to 1-2 against section opponents and 2-4 in district games.
"Overall I thought we made some good strides," said Nevis head coach Shawn Klimek. "We just struggled to score in the red zone."
In Friday night's other Section 6 games, Win-E-Mac shut out by Warren-Alvarado-Oslo 42-0 to improve to 4-2, Rothsay fell to 2-4 with a 28-14 loss to Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley, Park Christian fell to 1-5 with a 52-10 loss to Wheaton/Herman-Norcross and Laporte dropped to 0-6 with a 48-18 loss to Clearbrook-Gonvick. The other district games saw Stephen-Argyle defeat Northern Freeze 29-2 and Kittson County Central defeat Goodridge-Grygla 30-16.
NCE/UH and Stephen-Argyle (which was rated No. 2 in last week's state poll) are tied atop the district standings at 6-0 with Goodridge-Grygla and Win-E-Mac sitting at 4-2. Kittson County Central and Northern Freeze are both 3-3 with Clearbrook-Gonvick joining Nevis at 2-4. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo and Laporte are both 0-6.
Nevis hosts Goodridge-Grygla Thursday night (Oct. 11) at 7 p.m. Goodridge-Grygla was rated No. 12 in last week's state poll.
