Panthers move up in state football poll

Two impressive wins to open the season helped the Park Rapids football team move into the top 10 in this week's Associated Press state Class AAA poll.

The Panthers, who shut out United North Central 46-0 and Thief River Falls 34-0 in the first two games of the season, received 8 points for the No. 10 ranking in this week's poll. Park Rapids was rated No. 20 with 7 points last week. Pierz (59 points), Rochester Lourdes (53 points) and Jordan (48 points) remained at the top with Pequot Lakes moving up a spot to No. 4 with 35 points. Glencoe-Silver Lake is No. 5 with 28 points while Breck (24 points), Jackson County Central (22 points), Perham (11 points) and Mora (9 points) also finished ahead of the Panthers. Perham dropped after being rated No. 6 last week. East Grand Forks was rated No. 13 with 6 points.

Nevis dropped to a share of the No. 10 spot in the state 9-man poll with 3 points after being rated No. 4 last week with 24 points. Spring Grove (50), Stephen-Argyle (45) and Verndale (38) returned to the top spots with Underwood and Cromwell tying for fourth place with 28 points. Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (23), Houston (22), Cook County (20) and Goodridge-Grygla (6) followed with Mountain Iron-Buhl and Grand Meadow joining the Tigers at No. 10. Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal received 2 points.

Detroit Lakes remained in the No. 4 spot in the state Class AAAA poll with 35 points. Holy Angels (60), Cloquet (54) and Winona (46) remained at the top of that poll. In the state Class AA poll, Barnesville stayed at the No. 4 spot with 35 points as Caledonia moved up to the No. 1 spot with 48 points. Ottertail Central was rated No. 5 in the state Class A poll with 14 points after being rated No. 10 last week. Minneota was rated No. 1 with 40 points.

Panthers rated No. 11 in state volleyball poll

Park Rapids received 18 points to earn the No. 11 ranking in this week's Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association's state Class AA volleyball poll.

Stewartville moved up a spot to take over the No. 1 position with 174 points while North Branch (170), Kasson-Mantorville (154), Marshall (142), Concordia Academy (126), Southwest Christian (120), Kenyon-Wanamingo (113), Sauk Centre (88), Watertown-Mayer (81) and Belle Plaine (54) followed.

Pine River-Backus was rated No. 7 in the state Class A poll with 121 points. Waterville-Elysian-Morristown topped the list with 222 points while Ada-Borup/Norman County West was No. 10 with 72 points.
