Panthers roll to conference victory over Crosby-Ironton


A dominating performance at the service line and at the net powered the Park Rapids volleyball team to a 3-0 Mid-State Conference win over Crosby-Ironton Thursday night at the Area High School gym.

The Panthers served 13 aces and pounded down 31 kills in sparking a 25-13, 25-6, 25-15 victory.

Kills by Kamree Carlson and Rilee Michaelson and three service points by Katelyn Weaver gave Park Rapids a quick 4-1 lead in Set 1. Kills by Kayleah Breitweser, Kaisa Coborn and Carlson and three service points by Kora Just, including a pair of aces, kept the Panthers in front 13-9. A winning tip by Kendra Scholz, three service points by Carlson, a kill by Coborn, a tip by Weaver, a kill by Breitweser, and a block by Breitweser and Coborn ignited a 12-4 run that closed out the opening set.

Carlson followed a kill by Michaelson by serving two aces and six points to give the Panthers a 7-1 advantage in Set 2. Breitweser and Coborn also had a block during the early going. Michaelson followed a kill by Carlson with two aces and eight service points as Park Rapids extended the margin to 17-4. Breitweser had two kills during that run while Michaelson and Coborn contributed a kill apiece. Kills by Coborn and Breitweser made it 20-6 before Just served out the set with three aces.

The Rangers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Set 3 before Weaver served an ace and six points to give Park Rapids a 7-3 edge. Michaelson started that run with a kill. Ace serves by Just and Michaelson and two kills apiece by Coborn and Carlson kept the Panthers in front by a 15-12 advantage before a kill by Scholz, a tip and kill by Michaelson, and two kills by Coborn made it 20-15. Just again served out the set with the aid of an ace and a kill by Coborn.

Just served seven aces and 11 points while Carlson served 14 points and Michaelson served 13 points. Coborn (9), Michaelson (8), Carlson (6) and Breitweser (5) combined for 28 kills. Weaver tallied 26 set assists. The Panthers had six service errors and six hitting errors.

On defense, Breitweser and Coborn teamed up for three blocks while Coborn led the way with 10 digs. Carlson (9), Weaver (9) and Michaelson (7) combined for 25 digs as the Panthers improved to 2-1 overall with the win in the conference debut for both teams.

Caitlyn Gutzman had 10 digs and Danielle Rydberg had five kills to lead the Rangers, who fell to 1-2 on the season.
