Footracing on the 4th

The 409 runners and walkers took off from the starting line at Heartland Park to kick off the 40th annual Firecracker 5K Footrace. Vance Carlson / Enterprise

Even though the numbers were down from previous years, the 40th annual Firecracker 5K Footrace was another successful fundraiser for the Park Rapids track and field teams and cross-country teams.

Because of the threat of rain, the start of the race was pushed back 30 minutes. The threat of rain may also have influenced participation numbers as 409 runners and walkers completed the 5K course, which started and ended at Heartland Park. That was the lowest number of participants since the race drew 407 runners and walkers in 2008. The race grew over the next few years with 453 in 2009, 553 in 2010, 542 in 2011, 638 in 2012, 716 in 2013, 754 in 2014, a record 780 in 2015, 556 in 2016 and 589 last year.

"I think the rain kept some people from registering. It also hurts the race when the 4th happens on Wednesday. There just aren't as many people around," said Kerry Johnson, the head coach of the Park Rapids cross-country teams. "We have so many wonderful volunteers who step up every year to make the race happen. It went well. With the way the morning started, we couldn't have asked for better race weather."

The runners who did show up provided competitive races in every age division as 22 states as well as Russia were represented. There were 190 men and 219 women who completed the certified USATF fast course. A kids fun run followed the 5K race.

Caleb Appleton of Zimmerman, last year's runner-up, won the men's 5K title in 15:44 while Wadena's Kenny Miller moved up a spot from last year to finish second in 15:53. Patrick Larson of Decorah, Iowa was third in 16:08.

In the women's race, Ashley Stevens of Windsor Heights led the pack in 20:14 with Sheila Johnson of Saint Petersburg, Russia following in 20:33. Nevis' Jade Rypkema was third in 20:36.

Age division winners featured Bert Foster of Moorhead in 23:28 (male 12-under), Ellie Trygstad of Clive, Iowa in 25:44 (female 12-under), Alec Means of Danville, Indiana in 17:27 (male 13-15), Rypkema (female 13-15), Brandon O'Hara of Perham in 17:20 (male 16-18), McKendra Long of Circle Pines in 23:02 (female 16-18), Appleton (male 19-29), Stevens (female 19-29), Yuri Vander Heljden of Nashville, Tennessee in 17:30 (male 30-39), Johnson (female 30-39), Miller (male 40-49), Cristy Risberg of Glyndon in 22:54 (female 40-49), Michael Brown of Bloomington in 19:46 (male 50-59), Cheryl Zitur of Rogers in 21:19 (female 50-59), Rob Larson of Decorah, Iowa in 23:08 (male 60-69), Regina Theisen of Park Rapids in 26:39 (female 60-69), Eddie Rousseau of Park Rapids in 29:18 (male 70-over) and Dodie Egge of Park Rapids in 49:30 (female 70-over).

There were 20 finishers in the male 12-under division, 17 in the female 12-under division, 15 in the male 13-15 division, 24 in the female 13-15 division, 24 in the male 16-18 division, 19 in the female 16-18 division, 28 in the male 19-29 division, 30 in the female 19-29 division, 27 in the male 30-39 division, 53 in the female 30-39 division, 42 in the male 40-49 division, 46 in the female 40-49 division, 25 in the male 50-59 division, 21 in the female 50-59 division, seven in the male 60-69 division, six in the female 60-69 division, two in the male 70-over division and three in the female 70-over division.

With July 4 falling on a Thursday next year, Johnson is anticipating more numbers and several familiar faces returning for this annual event in 2019.

"People do make it an annual tradition. It's something they can all do together and it's such a great environment," said Johnson. "It's fun to see the same families year after year."
