Braham ousts Tigers from section playoffs
Braham capitalized on six walks and four errors to rally from a 4-0 deficit to eliminate Nevis from the Section 5A baseball playoffs with an 8-4 win June 4 at Pierz.
The Tigers, who were the No. 1 seed in the West half of the section, took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Luke DeWulf's two-run single and RBIs by Dillon McGee and Jack Landquist gave Nevis the early lead. Jack DeWulf, Luke DeWulf, Adam Thompson and Shep Davis scored the Tigers' four runs.
That was all the offense the Tigers managed the rest of the game. Landquist had a double and Dan Mistic had a single to round out Nevis' three-hit attack.
Braham, the No. 1 seed in the West, tied the game by scoring once in the third and three times in the fifth before advancing with a four-run seventh inning.
McGee started and gave up four runs (two earned) on three hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in five innings. Derek Lindow took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 1 ⅓ innings. Davis struck out both batters he faced to end the seventh.
Nevis ended the season with an 18-4 record.
Pine River-Backus, the No. 4 seed in the West, defeated Braham 7-4 in an elimination game June 5 at Pierz. Braham closed the season with a 16-3 record.
Hinckley-Finlayson, the No. 2 seed in the East, defeated PR-B 9-4 in the section championship game June 7 at Pierz. Hinckley-Finlayson will carry a 14-4 record to the state Class A tournament while PR-B ended the season at 13-8.
