Esox open season by defeating Sebeka

Austin Becker hit a two-run home run and earned the victory in relief as the Park Rapids Esox opened the season with a 7-6 Lake and Pine League amateur baseball victory over Sebeka Sunday afternoon at the Park Rapids Area High School field.

TJ Erickson singled and scored on Becker's blast in the first inning as the Esox led 2-0. Jed Ryan and Kevin Kuhn singled to lead off the second and advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Micah Barrett. Ryan scored on a pick-off play to second for a 3-0 lead.

Sebeka tied the game at 3-3 in the third and took a 6-5 lead by scoring three times in the sixth. The Esox tied the game at 6-6 by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth before pushing across the winning run in the seventh.

Park Rapids finished with nine hits with Dave Mortenson going 2 for 4 and Kuhn going 2 for 3. Dylan Stenberg, Becker, Kuhn and Mortenson scored the other runs for the Esox with Kuhn producing the other RBI.

Erickson started and gave up four runs on three hits and five walks while striking out 10 in 5 ⅔ innings. Becker pitched the final 3 ⅓ innings, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out four.

The Esox will host the Bemidji Blue Ox Saturday afternoon before traveling to Nimrod Sunday afternoon for another Lake and Pine League game. Both games start at 1:30 p.m.
