Tigers, Panthers, Braves open playoffs at home

Nevis, Park Rapids and Menahga will host opening-round games as the section girls basketball tournament begins.

Nevis, the No. 7 seed in the North with a 9-17 record, will host No. 10 Laporte (3-22) Monday night (Feb. 26) at 7 in a first-round game. The winner of that game advances to play at No. 2 Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (22-4) Thursday night (March 1) at 7.

In the other Section 5A North first-round game, No. 8 Browerville (2-23) hosts No. 9 Bertha-Hewitt (2-22) with the winner traveling to No. 1 Menahga (26-0) Thursday night (March 1) at 7.

The other Section 5A North games on March 1 pit No. 4 Sebeka (13-12) hosting No. 5 McGregor (12-12) and No. 3 Pine River-Backus (17-9) hosting No. 6 Verndale (9-16).

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (19-7) and East Central (19-6) are the top teams in the South half of Section 5A.

In the Section 8AA tournament, Park Rapids received the No. 3 seed in the South with a 13-11 record and will host No. 6 Long Prairie-Grey Eagle (11-13) Thursday night (March 1) at 7. The winner of that game plays the winner between Roseau (the No. 2 seed in the North with a 20-5 record) and Warroad (the No. 7 seed in the North with a 4-22 record) at Concordia College in Moorhead on Saturday (March 3) at 4:15 p.m. in a section quarterfinal game.

The other Section 8AA South first-round games on March 1 find No. 1 Barnesville (20-5) hosting No. 8 Wadena-Deer Creek (7-18), No. 2 Perham (13-13) hosting No. 7 Staples-Motley (2-22) and No. 4 Frazee (11-15) hosting No. 5 Breckenridge (10-16).

In the North half, No. 1 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (22-4) hosts No. 8 Bagley (1-24), No. 3 East Grand Forks (21-5) hosts No. 6 Crookston (13-13) and No. 4 Thief River Falls (15-10) hosts No. 5 Hawley (15-9).

Concordia will host all four South-North section crossover games Saturday. Concordia will also host the section semifinals on March 6 and the section championship game on March 9.
