Panthers hold off Wolves
Natalie Kinkel hit back-to-back jumpers from the corner that sparked a game-ending 10-2 run as the Park Rapids girls basketball team defeated Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 77-71 Thursday night at the Area High School gym.
This game featured eight ties and 11 lead changes before Kinkel gave the Panthers the lead for good with her second basket of the game.
Justine Day hit three 3-pointers as W-H-A jumped out to a 17-8 lead with 9:51 to play in the first half. Kaisa Coborn's jumper, Paige Johnson's basket off a rebound and Jaiden McCollum's jumper led the Panthers in the early going.
A jumper by Coborn, a layup off a steal and two jumpers by Rilee Michaelson, a 3-pointer by Kendra Coborn, and two jumpers by McCollum tied the game at 23-23 with 5:55 to go before Day hit another 3-pointer to give W-H-A a 30-23 advantage at the 4:42 mark.
Two jumpers by Michaelson, a jumper by Johnson and a 3-pointer by Kendra Coborn kept Park Rapids within 36-34 before a three-point play by Katie Benjamin gave the Wolves a 41-34 lead at the half.
Park Rapids opened the second half with an 11-0 run as a 3-pointer and jumper by Kaisa Coborn, a jumper by McCollum, and two inside baskets by Michaelson provided a 45-43 lead with 15:24 remaining.
A layup by Benjamin and a pair of 3-pointers by Day gave the Wolves a 54-49 advantage at the 14:02 mark before a jumper by Johnson, two inside baskets by Olivia McDonald, a 3-pointer by Kendra Coborn, a layup off a steal by Michaelson, and a jumper and three-point play by Kaisa Coborn gave Park Rapids a 65-62 lead with 9:39 to play.
W-H-A went on a 7-2 run to claim a 69-67 lead with 7:06 remaining before Kinkel's two jumpers gave the Panthers a 71-69 lead at the 6:15 mark. Jumpers by Kaisa Coborn and Johnson in the final 3:40 helped seal the win.
Michaelson (21), Kaisa Coborn (18) and McCollum (12) hit double figures to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Panthers, who improved to 5-1.
Bri Raddatz (20), Day (19) and Benjamin (18) led a balanced attack for the Wolves, who fell to 4-2 on the season.
