Braves split two in final conference games

The Menahga baseball team closed out the Park Region Conference schedule by splitting games against Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale and Wadena-Deer Creek.

Menahga scored twice in the fifth inning and four times in the sixth to defeat BHV 6-0 on May 16 while Jake Dykhoff threw a one-hitter and struck out nine in leading Wadena-Deer Creek to a 10-0 win in six innings Thursday at Deer Creek.

Nick Ackerman threw a five-hitter and struck out seven as Pine River-Backus defeated the Braves 8-0 in the regular-season finale Friday.

In the win over BHV, Canton Matson's double and Thomas Litzau's two-run single gave Menahga a 2-0 lead before singles by Matt Horsma and Al Pietila and a two-run home run by Matson concluded the scoring in the sixth.

Pietila went 2 for 4 and Matson went 2 for 3 with two runs as the Braves finished with eight hits. Pietila picked up the win, allowing three hits over the first five innings. BHV fell to 5-12 on the season.

Mitch Peterson's single in the fourth inning provided the only hit for Menahga in the loss to W-DC.

Lars Keranen started and took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits over four innings. W-DC scored twice in the third and four times in the fourth to improve to 15-4 overall.

Parkers Prairie won the conference title with a 13-1 record while W-DC followed at 10-4. Menahga and New York Mills shared third place with 9-5 records with Pillager (7-7), BHV (5-9), Sebeka (2-12) and Ottertail Central (1-13) rounding out the standings.

Five errors helped PR-B score eight unearned runs in the regular-season finale.

Litzau went 2 for 3 with singles in the first and third innings. Singles by Horsma in the second, Pietila in the third and Ed Salmen in the seventh were the Braves' other hits. Litzau started and took the loss after giving up seven hits in 3.2 innings.

PR-B scored four times in the sixth to seal the win and improve to 10-7.
