Park Rapids' premier winter attraction has flown the coop due to a low river level. What had been a growing population of trumpeter swans, geese and mallard ducks is down to zero. They have likely migrated to open water, but not in Hubbard County. Peter Meyer, a Park Rapids resident, has fed the population for years, growing it to more than 100 swans last year. Meyers checked the Third Crow Wing open water, where swans have been known to gather, and found none of them there. DNR area wildlife manager Rob Rabasco said they likely won't return this winter. The Fish Hook River is at record low levels and froze over a week ago where the birds congregate.
