As the holiday shopping season officially begins Friday, Nov. 26, we want to offer you some advice.

First, shop local. Most likely, you can find the perfect Christmas gifts right here at one of our local businesses for the same or lower prices. Avoid that long drive through heavy traffic, extra time and gas money and support your local community.

The money you spend at your local businesses doesn't just stay here, but continues to be used to support our neighbors, friends and local causes. Don't assume bigger cities will have cheaper prices. Local businesses also stand behind their product and are there to help if something goes wrong.

Park Rapids' annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration and Yuletide Sampler is Friday on Main. This is the perfect opportunity to visit our local businesses and browse the newest inventory.

The Yuletide Sampler will be from 5 to 6 p.m. at participating downtown businesses. At 6 p.m. community carol singing will begin, St. Joseph's Hospice Christmas tree will be lit and Rudolph and Santa will descend on Main Avenue.

Bob Seifert, Coborn's manager, will emcee.

This year's tree was donated by Mike and Helen Sheeran, owners of Superior Embroidery.

Dr. Paul Dove will conduct the Calvary Lutheran Choir and lead the audience in songs of the season.

Santa's House will be located at The Good Life Café on Main. Santa will lend an ear to children after the tree lighting ceremony and from 3 to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 18.

The community tree lighting is done in partnership with St. Joseph's Hospice Light Up a Life program.

The tree will be lit by bulbs purchased in memory of a friend or loved one or honoring a survivor. A gift of $5 will light up a bulb on the community Christmas tree through Christmas.

To sponsor a bulb contact St. Joseph's Hospice at 732-3311.

Let's support our community and our friends. Shop locally this holiday season.
