LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Residents generous to Salvation Army

The Park Rapids community came through for the organization's Christmas 2020 kettle drive.

The generosity of Park Rapids has been shown by a very successful Hubbard Country Salvation Army kettle drive, recently completed (Nov. 27 through Dec. 18).

In spite of COVID-19, Hugo’s Family Marketplace, Walmart Supercenter, Coborn’s Grocery, Cwikla Ace Hardware, Walgreens Pharmacy and L&M Supply graciously allowed us to ring at their stores for four weeks of Fridays and Saturdays following safety precautions. Also the red kettle was invited to ring at the Itasca Mantrap Co-op Christmas drive-through open house.

The community has been very generous, visiting kettles and writing checks during the pandemic, donating $24,177 for the drive. That is a 38 percent increase from last season’s $17,673 collection.

Gratitude is owed to the bell ringers who stepped up to ring during the COVID-19 pandemic, many spending 2.5- or 3-hour shifts ringing. PRAHS BPA students rang four days. American Legion veterans and Sons of the Legion covered the last day of the drive ringing at four businesses. Other organizations involved included Calvary Lutheran Church, the Masons, Osage Lions, reality agencies, banks and credit unions, Itascatur, North Country Trail, PRAHS FFA, Two Inlets Lake Association, Eastside Church, Park Rapids Fire Department, Nevis Women’s Club, Day Activity Center and many individuals – Terharks, Wilsons, Manloves, Beckers, Kathy Belt, Ray Niedzielski, Zimmermans, Rita Boyce, Sharon Netzel, Broughtons, Lundstroms, Scrapers and Ombergs.

The nice weather hasn’t brought a lot of snow, but helped in receiving contributions. Yet, the true reason for the increase in donations many believe is the community’s hope to help those in need through this difficult year.

I would also like to thank Greg Kolinoski and Ron Norenberg for helping gather the kettles each night and straightening out the crumbled bills for the TruStar Federal Credit Union to make deposits.

If you are interested in donating, write a check to Hubbard County Salvation Army and send to
