LETTER: The fight goes on

Election year kickoff with letters to the editor from both sides shows deep misunderstandings of what and how their parties plan to address the critical issues we face here and around the world.
What is evident, however, is how murky the way forward is for MAGA Republicans since there are no actual plans to “Make America Great Again” that have substance.
But wait. Upon rereading Kathy Belt’s April 30 letter, it appears that MAGA Republicans are not the same group as the Trumplican MAGA cult. Much of the letter’s content expressed common interests with the Democrat’s column.
Most importantly, the letter showed there are active remnants remaining in the Grand Old Party to offer hope that bipartisan governing can be restored. We must now hope MAGA Republicans will have their own agenda aside from Trumplicans. A third group, the Republicans in Name Only (RINOS), like Liz Cheney, Kasich and Kinzinger, are an emerging factor.
What, in fact, does MAGA mean? What would make us great again, if we ever were? Trumplicans had four years to show something other than tax breaks for the wealthy, relaxation of essential regulations, isolationist foreign policies that weakened NATO among others, breaking international agreements, cozying up to the worst butcher (Putin) in modern history, denying refugee rights, challenging free and fair elections (no, there was NO fraud of consequence in the 2020 elections), fostering and supporting insurrection and sedition crimes so heinous in the eyes of our founders that death was the ultimate penalty, denying women’s rights and civil rights fought for over decades – just too much to recount, but the destruction done in four years will take decades to recover, if even possible.
Trumplican’s handling of the COVID crises was criminal – first denying it, then relegating responsibility to this national crisis to the states, thereby ensuring a patchwork solution. This strategy was exasperated by a presidential campaign with no mask required for rally attendance in cities and towns across the country. That, along with the motorcycle rally in South Dakota were major events that accelerated spread of the deadly virus throughout the country.
During Trumplican years, there were no advances in health care for everyone, not even a repeal /replace of Obamacare as promised for eight years, no increase in working wages or benefits for the working class, no guarantees for the stability of Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, food assistance programs, public education, no immigration reform, no efforts toward climate control, sharp cutbacks in government workers/regulators, hundreds of baseless allegations and accusations against them whoever “they” might be.
Now, we are faced with the potential erosion of democracies across the world in favor of authoritarian rulers, like Putin and Chi, among others who rule by cruelty, misinformation and threats of nuclear attacks.
Did we have a hand in this debacle? Of course we did. Trumplicans answered Putin’s call to weaken NATO and seemed to be taking his directions in other foreign affairs to Russia’s advantage. Now, Putin is suffering staggering defeat by placing too much stock in his successes at acquiring foreign “assets” so his invasion of Ukraine would be a cake walk. Little did he understand the resilience of a democratic country’s will to remain free from authoritarian rule.
