When we celebrate Presidents’ Day, we especially remember two whose birthdays are in February: President George Washington, who helped create the U.S.; and President Abraham Lincoln, who helped preserve the Union.
At the same time, let’s remember our local leaders and those in public service who continue to work for our good.
To my State Senator, Paul Utke, and my State Representative, Steve Green; to the county commissioners, city mayor and council, and school district authorities; and to law enforcement officers and emergency responders: Thank you for your perseverance in the battle to preserve a civil state for communities within our constitutional republic. You are strong warriors, though I imagine you grow weary at times while representing, guiding and protecting us. May you be encouraged by another voice in a war of words – Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ.
“We commend ourselves through our use of righteous weapons, whether for pressing our cause or defending it; through being honored and dishonored, praised and blamed, considered deceptive and sincere, unknown and famous. And we commend ourselves as God’s workers headed for death, yet look! we’re alive! as punished, yet not killed; as having reason to be sad, yet always filled with joy; as poor, yet making many people rich; as having nothing, yet having everything” (2 Corinthians 6:7-10).
