LETTER: Correctly identify people with disabilities
Twice recently in stories about the Developmental Achievement Center (DAC), the Enterprise has used the label “the disabled” to identify clients of the DAC. People who use the DAC are not a category “the disabled.” They are living, breathing human beings who are more than just their disabilities or situation. They are daughters and sons, brothers and sisters who engage in various activities for various reasons in and around Park Rapids. People with disabilities should be written and talked about as people not as a category. In the future, I very much hope to hear people who use the DAC written about as people or as “people with a disability” and identified as other people described in the paper are identified – by where they live, who they are related to, what they believe in or the activities they pursue.
