Letter to Editor: With respect for Star of North Marine Corps Honor Guard
My grandfather, Frank Combs, was a Marine who served our country in World War II. He recently passed away at the age of 98.
When I attended my grandpa's funeral in Austin, Minn. I was quite shocked to see the Star of the North Marine Corps Honor Guard from the Park Rapids area — not because they were honoring a fellow Marine, but because they had to drive 300 miles to get to that funeral.
My grandpa lived in Park Rapids for a short time from the age of 86 to the age of 94. On the day of the funeral, the members of the Star of the North Marine Corps Honor Guard hadn't seen my grandfather since he moved to New Mexico in 2014.
When I thanked the humble servants of the Star of the North Marine Corps Honor Guard for serving at the funeral, all they had to say was "He was a good Marine. He was one of our brothers." With great respect, my hat's off to these gentleman and all those who serve, or have served, our country.
