Editorial: Lots to do in Park Rapids in summertime

The Park Rapids lakes area is in the mist of our busy summer season and we’ve had a great few weeks filled with lots of activities and fun for everyone.
Fourth of July events, Menahga Midsummer, Nevis Pig Races, 2nd Street Stage, Bite of Park Rapids and more have given us plenty to do.
These events wouldn’t happen if not for the many volunteers who step up to the plate. So, thank you to all who have volunteered or will volunteer in the next few months in these events.
2nd Street Stage events will continue each Thursday evening throughout the summer in downtown Park Rapids featuring music, entertainment, food and kids activities.
This week is the Hubbard County Fair, put on by the Shell Prairie Ag Association, is from July 17-21 at the fairgrounds.
Make sure to come out for your favorite fair foods from cheese curds to ice cream and check out the activities each day of the fair.
July 17, the fair will have a 4-H teen dance from 7-11 p.m. with music by “Dirt Road Prophets.” It’s for all youths age 19 and under.
Thursday the popular talent show begins at 7 p.m. Friday night, July 19, comedian Mary Mack will entertain in the grandstand at 7 p.m.
Saturday’s main events include the out of field and modified tractor and truck pull and kiddie tractor pull.
In the past the demolition derby has been the biggest draw, with crowds cheering their favorite racer. This year the demo derby is Sunday, July 21, at 1 p.m.
The 4-H exhibit hall will be home to chickens, bunnies, horses, pigs, sheep, goats and cattle throughout the week.
Also on the horizon is Nevis Muskie Days July 19-20, featuring music galore.
Muskie Days will have a community fish fry, a 5K run, a kids’ fishing tournament, a watermelon seed spitting contest and parades.
A notable 30-plus bands will arrive at the lakeside village Friday and Saturday, adding a melodic mix of reggae, blues, folk, Americana and rock to the summer festival. The musicians ­– including the notable Jill and the New Gruv, Soap, Mikel Wright and the Wrongs, Enchanted Ape and the Limns ­– will be performing on six stages during the two-day event.
Make the most of summer by attending some of these unique events. And volunteer if you have a chance. Park Rapids is a special place in the summer and a draw for many people.
