HUBBARD COUNTY GOP: A time for unity

Editor’s note: Both the Hubbard County DFL and Hubbard County Republicans are invited to write columns for the Enterprise’s Opinion page.

National unity has never been more important, yet not many times in history has our nation been as divided as it is now.

Do we need to be this divided or can we find values we can unite behind? We believe we can!

As Americans, we have worked together to prosper so many times before. We can do it now, if we don't let ourselves be misguided and divided.

Social media and modern journalism seek to pit us against each other. Don't let them! Social media and journalism try to think for you and speak for you. Don't let them! We have to think for ourselves and stop blindly listening to celebrities and other paid personalities.

We can all agree on progress and find solutions that work for everyone. We can work to incentivize green energy while keeping pipelines and jobs safe. We can speak of equality and find solutions that don't discriminate against or give preferential treatment to any specific group based on their skin color or gender.

We have come too far as a nation to let them divide us now based on theories that clearly seek to discriminate, such as Critical Race Theory. Whether you are discriminating against white, black or brown, it is always wrong to treat people based on the color of their skin or heritage. Let's treat each other as equals, give each other equal opportunity, but also understand that we all have unique circumstances and needs. Equal does not mean we get the same thing, it means we get the same opportunity. It's up to us to step up and take it.

And this is where the most critical need for all of us is: Step up and help people take advantage of all the great opportunities available to them in this country. A smile and an arm to lead and lean on is worth a thousand times more than a check from Uncle Sam handed to them on the couch.

Our nation is one of the freest in the world and anyone born (or naturalized) as an American can consider themselves privileged. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

If you are tired of victim mentality and negativity towards our nation, find a group of people around you who believe that unity and personal responsibility is the way to progress.

Believing in your own country is not arrogance, it's gratitude.

Let's talk to each other, not yell at each other. Let's include everyone, not cancel each other. Let's agree to be grateful for the freedoms we have been given by upholding the founding principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all.

Think for yourself and ask yourself who is advancing ideas that will uphold your life, your liberty and your pursuit of happiness?

Ask yourself where ideas of division, blame and victim mentality have led people in the past. Benjamin Franklin said, “It is the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority.” If you blindly follow now, there will come a time when you don't get to question authority any longer, and you may find out that those who you thought had your best interest in mind, did not. That's why our Founding Fathers placed the power in the hand of the people. As Republicans, we want to unite and keep it that way.

I know that at some point I will have to quit my resistance to indoor exercise routines, but so far,  I’ve managed to come up with some ways to help keep me physically active outdoors.
"Praying can be intimidating, and our history of making prayer obligatory and reverent hasn’t been particularly helpful, in my view. ... I would encourage us to view prayer as simply a conversation with God, or Jesus if that is more comfortable. You can pray to the Holy Spirit too, or Mother Earth, for that matter."
