Rhoda Pantaleo, age 88, passed away January 11, 2022, at Mahnomen Health Care Center under the care of her family and Hospice of the Red River Valley. In true Rhoda fashion she privately and bravely fought cancer for three years.

Rhoda Louise Kraft was born August 25, 1933, in Wild Rice Township, rural Gary, MN, to Ray H. and Esther (Schlenz) Kraft. She was the second of five children. Following graduation from Twin Valley High School in 1951, Rhoda moved to Minneapolis, MN. While there she attended the Airline and Railroad Communication School. After completion, she moved to Chicago, IL, where she worked as a teletype operator at the Santa Fe Railroad.

At a mutual friend’s party, Rhoda “Mouse” met the love of her life, Joe “Moose” Pantaleo. They were united in marriage on October 30, 1954, in Chicago. In 1957, they moved to Tinley Park, IL, where they raised their children, Joe and Cindy. They were very active in the Tinley Park Bulldogs Youth Football and Little League Baseball programs. Family gatherings, community events, time with friends-especially their many themed parties-filled the years with special memories. Sadly, on September 6, 1974, Joe passed away unexpectedly at the age of 42. In 1976, Rhoda returned to Minnesota to live but Tinley Park and its memories always held onto her heart.

Rhoda was never one to sit idle. Whether she was preparing one of her signature dishes or tending to her beloved perennial beds, flowers and plants, she kept busy. Until her health started to decline, Rhoda was proudly independent and self-sufficient and, always remained active. Her proudest and most treasured “job” was being Grandma, Grams and Rho Rho. With Grandma you could…and did! The wonderful memories she created for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren are her greatest legacy.

In 1972, Joe and Rhoda purchased a cabin on Stocking Lake near Park Rapids, MN. “The Cabin” was very important and special to Rhoda…her sanctuary. She spent her summer months there. Always looking forward to walks, seeing her loons, the pink lady slippers that bloomed every summer, and the wildlife that would venture in her yard to greet her. She embraced the tranquility and privacy. But, for whomever had the privilege of spending time there, it is a place filled with good memories and stories. “The Cabin” is a place where Rhoda was truly home.

Rhoda is survived by her son, Joe (Barb) Pantaleo, Mahnomen; daughter, Cindy Roering, Twin Valley; grandchildren: Nicci Lunde, Jennifer (Matt) Moen, Jacob (Victoria Stringer) Pantaleo, Luke (Ali) Skansgaard, and Julia (Jeremiah) Madoll; great grandchildren: Hadlie (Cody Price), Wylie, Katherine, Nathaniel, Kase, Autumn, Anders, Nadia; great-great granddaughter, Amelia; sister, Ramona Weaver; brothers, Ralph (Sharon), Raymond, and Roger (Joyce); sister-in-law, Isabelle Hassing; many nieces and nephews; and the Pantaleo family in Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; her parents; an infant sister, Ruth; son-in-law, Clayton Roering; grandson-in-law, Jeff Lunde; her sister-in-law and best friend, Charlotte Kraft; and a brother-in-law, Richard Davis.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at Immanuel Cemetery in Strand Township, rural Gary, MN.
